PHCN breaks electricity generation record
By Obinna Ezeobi
Published: Sunday, 5 Oct 2008

The Power Holding Company of Nigeria said on Friday that it had recorded the highest peak energy generation level ever in the history of the country.

In a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja, PHCN said that what it recorded on Tuesday, 30th September 2008 was the highest peak energy generation of 86,564.89 megawatts hour with a continuous generation output of not below 3,400MW throughout the day.

The statement, which was signed by the management of the company added that, “This is the highest energy generation peak in the history of the Electricity industry in Nigeria . The highest level recorded in the past was 80,123.0MWH on October 27, 2006, (an improvement of 6,441.89MWH).”

By this feat, electricity consumers nationwide recorded the highest power consumption in one day in the history of the country, the company said.

Unfortunately, however, many homes across the country were without electricity on that day, even as load shedding continued unabated across the country.

The statement from the utility company further indicated that the record was made possible through the on-going rehabilitation of existing power stations and management of water at the hydro dams.

It added that improvements were also effected in the maintenance and management of the national transmission grid, and distribution network.

No chit. Then how come the entire nation of Nigeria is still without ANY electrical power ?

Oh, right, I get it. We are talking about THEORETICAL power generation figures that exist only in the minds of the officials who looted all the money budgeted for power generation in Nigeria.

Even if we were producing at maximum capacity, there will still be areas without electricity.
The current demand far outweighs the current supply and capacity. We need more power stations and upgrades of existing ones.

Re: Nepa breaks Generation Record by vigasimple(m): 11:45pm On Oct 05, 2008
The people at PHCN needs their heads examine. they are completely insane and utterly foolish.

Nigerians have some brains. If you need at least 20,000M or eevn in some instances 50,000MW and you only have 3,400MW, what exactly are you 'rejoicing or celebrating' An hungry man witout light/power does not understand the meaning of all your output level nonesense. Tell your Mr. president Yar A'dull to at least do something better and different from his father OBJ and the PDP NO POWER party.

As for PHCN, i think they've been improving but not yet uhuru!

@ bettes
I agree with you completely. That's why i am saying this is a step in the right direction. Though not worth celebrating like some hard critics here have written but it's a good news.
Re: Nepa breaks Generation Record by bawomolo(m): 12:48am On Oct 06, 2008
it's a step in the right direction but isn't PHCN progressing at a snail pace. this developments mean little if demand is exponential growing.
Re: Nepa breaks Generation Record by Pataki: 9:20am On Oct 06, 2008
But recent statements from people within Nigeria asked by me, showed that Power generation in Nigeria has increased.

Is this really the truth, or is it just sub-existing in some quarters? undecided

South africa with less than a third of Nigeria's population has a generating capacity of 40 000mW, this 'press release' was to note that PHCN reached a record 3400mW. Congratulations PHCN  cheesy. Personally not trying to kick a dog when it is down but this should not even have been mentioned at all. They should have just carried on with the job without mentioning this because it is still abysmal, i mean, should people now go and throw owambe because of this? Even with the peak, stating that "some areas" were without light is nothing short of an understatemnt, a great one at that. Again, African country as an example: South Africa with industries, etc - 40 000mW; Nigeria with more than 3 times that population - 3400mW at its highest peak ever. Such information should not even be released but should be very highly classified (only accecible by the president) as to protect the already non existent 'national pride', when it reaches 30 000mW then they can release the news cautiously.  cheesy
Re: Nepa breaks Generation Record by QuotaSyste(m): 11:24am On Oct 06, 2008
What do you expect in a country where celebrating mediocrity is normal? This is what you get when you have mediocre and illiterate and pororus heads from some certain groups managing a whole country. These are people that knows nothing about management, yet they have refused to relinquish power by using force to hold on to the management of a country. Generating electric capacity is not same as eating tuwo and amala.

Ol'boy stop using your Yoruba accent to write English language. It's either you write in English or you can write in Yoruba language if you wish. It should be has and not as as is obtained in your accent. You and other Yorubas are always making this mistake when writing here and in other forums and i just felt like calling you out today to let you correct yourself in your future posts. You Yoruba comrades shoudl also read and start write "has" as "has" and not "as". No bashing intended.

Well you can give whatever excuses you wish to(typo indeed!!) and shell as many times as you wish it does not change the fact that you need to check yourself before you start critising others, there are books i can recommend for you that can help you improve on your spelling problems.
Again it is 'YORUBA' not 'Yoruba' and 'FAILED' not 'FAILD'
Are you sure you finished nursery school ?
