Australian Advises Citizens Against Travelling To Nigeria by Swash042(m): 4:07pm On Jul 03, 2014
Lagos - Australia has discouraged its citizens from travelling to Nigeria because of the high threats of violence and terror attacks.
"We advise you (citizens) to reconsider your need to travel to Nigeria at this time due to the very high threat of terrorist attack, the high risk of kidnapping, the unpredictable security situation, the heightened risk of violent civil unrest and the high level of violent crime," read a statement by Latonia Dabiri-Mpamugo - Consular and Passports Officer at the Embassy in Abjua. If they decided to travel to Nigeria, citizens were urged to exercise extreme caution as the security situation could deteriorate without warning. The message also advised the citizens to avoid areas, which could be targets ofextremists, until further notice. "In the past extremists have targeted venues broadcasting international sporting events and may do so again. You should be aware that terrorists may launch attacks during religious festivals and holidays, significant dates and anniversaries. Places of worship have been targeted during
the Christmas and Easter periods in recent years." Among states the citizens were dissuaded from visiting include Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Kano, Kaduna, Plateau, Yobe and Adamawa. These are among regions that are the bedrock of the Boko Haram terrorists.
