THE ANAMBRA STATE COAT OF ARMS – What The Symbols Represent

Our new coat of arm and symbol brings together the spirit and essence of our great state.
The new coat of arm and symbol of Anambra state is made up of the following elements:

Ugo di ebube....
Ugo di ebube stands for Royalty, Pride and Excellence in Igbo cosmology. No other bird typifies the Anambra person better than the Royal Eagle.

Nkwu...
Nkwu in Igbo cosmology denotes plenty. The pair here represents the wealth of talents that abound in both the male and female citizens of Anambra.

The Niger Bridge ...
This engineering artistry is iconic. The Niger bridge symbolizes the gateway into the heart of the Igbo nation.

Igwebuike.. the 21 active currents
...Symbolises our 21 local government areas. This represents the continuous developmental energy of our people

Okike...
Okike symbolizes dignity, honour, nobility. It is positioned at the base because the foundation of our aspirations is based on the time honoured igbo tradition of truth, honesty and hardwork.

....the tapestry on each of the tusks symbolizes the industry, dexterity and creative essence that lead to the height of our achievements.

The Penny...
The round coin under the roped pot is the penny of the old days. The penny sign stands for Aku na Uba. We are proud business and craft men who travel around the world doing business.

....The circle at the centre of the penny shows our continuing readiness to put at the centre of all our action, God Almighty who is depicted here by a circle – having neither beginning nor an ending.

The Roped Pot...
The Roped Pot symbolizes the art of metal works among our people. It also represents the history and success of this ancient art.

Ugu leaves and blooming petals of sunflower...

..Symbolise our prosperity in agriculture and a hearty and cheerful people.

no matter how much i look at this, i think it's damn ugly.
I love the symbolism, but the proportion and medium are both off putting.

either it's all un-real and graphically designed, or it's all real and simply photographed. plus the bird is quite small.

You're not alone; that is the prevailing opinion.
Unlike you, I don't like the symbolism... In fact, it's too symbolic that it has lost all meaning.
That combination of live ugu leaves and a bitmap eagle and torch drives me insane.
The palm trees are ridiculously out of scale; in what universe is a sunflower the same size as a palm tree?
The tusks are larger than life.
Biko, Obiano should employ a proper Graphics expert; there are tons of them on NL.

-Dr. Willie Maduabuchi Obiano

The idea of a logo is good,
But this one has too many messages,
And too many symbols.

The message should be short and simple.
Nothing identifies Anambra people more than the Rising Sun
It confines the past by its antecedents and the future by it glory of the emerging sun, into one icon we can all identify with. I do understand The political Dabble associated with it and the war. But it was not just about the war, it was about emancipation.
Look at the Japanese flag, a simple red dot.

Secondly, the original first image should be fit for Monochrome, not computer generated colour shades. Colours should be primary shades.
These are 3D shaded clips. That tusk is simply not easily reproducible. Too complex.

Forgive the criticism, it is part of building. This initial draft was probably put together by laymen like us, Obiano should find a good professional and graphic Artist to polish it. And probably conduct a research poll on what Anambrarians believes represents their aspirations

My suggested Symbols are
1. Do away with the repeated British format, it is too colonial for 2014, why is the Eagle important to Igbos? The British empire is dead.
2. The centre icon should be the rising Sun
3. I love the igbo ukwu pot, as a reference to our art
4. The Niger bridge is so outdated to become an Engineering reference- what about an Anvil, or bellows referencing black smithing.
Do not forget that Egbe Awka is renown
5. The whole leaves thing is not necessary, their are many other imaginative ways of putting together the Symbols without mimicking the Nigerian Coat of Arms
6. What of conveying the words using the Abidii symbols, a secret of the Ozo and Nze's
7. The Palm tree is not so significant to the future of our commerce and industry.
8. The star of David disguised in the Penny, is a cloaked reference to Isreal, since it is a major symbol of the Isreali flag. It is the element of the symbol that I find intellectually stimulating, which I like. But the Penny is not easily recognised as a penny, so the cloaking failed.
The simplicity of its design should take a cue from the Monochrome Israeli Star of David
9. Most of the icons are entirely of the past, what about the future?

Thank u to those of u that criticized the new anambra logo with a loving and pure heart. If u look closely, u will notice that the bird is not actually clinching(grasp) on that touch, rather the touch is fixed between its feathers. I was once praying for actualization of Biafra but I have grown up to ask why Ikemba Ojukwu started the war at the first place and I came to understand that it was for his personal gain and pride over a junior office becoming Head of State. No one can trick all Igbos again, millions of people dead starved and people were killed like flies just because of someone greed and pride, I can never be a fool to those calling Biafra. Nigeria was in peace in 1967 and there was no tribalism against the Igbos at that time why did Ojukwu ask our people to fight for actualization of Biafra. Remember, that war is what has made other tribes to hates us and never support us in becoming president. It is all costed by Ojukwu.

I also agree Biafra's time has come and gone, but get some facts straight.
Ojukwu didn't go to war with Gowon, Gowon went to war with Ojukwu.
Ojukwu did not withdraw from Nigeria because of selfish reasons, various issues necessitated this.
I know Nigeria has even removed this from her history syllabus, but let me sum up.
Before the war, the people of the eastern region were facing persecution and being killed. After the war, they still faced persecution and marginalisation, but the killing stopped.
However, Igbo military leaders had brought this on Igbo people, and I can't say the persecution was completely undeserved as the Igbo of the time were simply to dominating to exist peacefully in a federation.

Cause: inciting the hate of other tribes by killing their leaders and effectively making Nigeria (both Northern and Southern) a state ruled solely by Igbo (eastern) military leaders + domination of trade at the time.

Effect: tribal clashes and violence against the eastern people (especially by the Northerners)

Ojukwu's solution: the creation of Biafra to protect the eastern people.

Nigeria's response: immediate military action without resort to diplomacy.

Results: no looser no vanquished or whatever the phrase was. however there was lack of self esteem as a people, loss of Language and culture, loss of trust from other eastern tribes and set back in development.

These things as well as their results are in the past, Biafra is in the past. But the facts shouldn't be distorted simply because we have re-integrated with Nigeria.
Ojukwu himself has been honoured so much by his people, and even by other Africans, as he is believed to have saved his people from the fate that met similar African tribes, such as that of the Tutsi's of Rwanda.

What you said is true but the same hatred is been incited to other tribes once we continue mentioning the past, Biafra as a name should be abolished for us to move on. We can also avoid inciting hatred among other tribes by avoiding being tribalism in our comments in the social media. There is no point of remembering what has past since it will not contribute to our current welfare. Let's take other tribes as our people and see if that love will exist in Nigeria. Where Love and charity abides, God is found.

I'm from Njiko-Awka LGA in Anambra State and If you want we can express ourselves n' Igbo Nzugbe. I'm not quoting myself but I want you to understand that there is no need for emerging of Baifra. It is all costed by Ojukwu.
you are really from NJIKO-AWKA. Igboman indeed.

What you said is true but the same hatred is been incited to other tribes once we continue mentioning the past, Biafra as a name should be abolished for us to move on. I agree with you. But apart from bigotry and tribal discrimination and hatred from Igbo, Nigeria has much bigger problems

Nigeria was never meant to be and it's very clear Nigeria was a mistake by the British

We Igbos are wise, we remain Nigerians forever and ever. Do not listen to the people that call them Biafra, they don't understand that meaning and what brought it, they are just shouting Biafra Biafra. I believe in One Nigeria and United Nigeria. Thanks

Am nt even talking about this, personally I think Biafra is best for the Igbo as Oduduwa is best for the Yoruba

Am talking about the star of David in the anambra logo...why not use something Igbo-ish rather than go to Israel to inspire a state logo

Why is this eagle left handed? I mean why is the light in the eagle's left hand?

I understand that logos are supposed to contain symbols that are understandable to its owners.
Why is my eagle left handed?

I'm also from Njikoka LGA in Anambra state. However, your respelling of the name has altered the true meaning of the word, njikoka, which means 'unity is greater'. The 'awka' word you're trying to impose on the word is natively pronounced with falling accents differently from the 'oka' in Njikoka and shouldn't have been juxtaposed in place of 'oka' in the first place.

Yes you are right. I always make the same mistake, I misunderstood it as "Joint of Awka". Thank you for your correction, I really appreciate it. A bu onye Ifiteani na Nimo.

redcliff: The graphic designer who did this should be flogged mercilessly until his butt develop mouth and starts to apologize. In pratice it is just so wrong to include a bitmap image and vector as logo in the same structure

My exact thoughts word for word.. cheesy cheesy

I stared at the ugliness of that before even viewing the logo's contents!
The flogging should be administered twice grin
