U guys act as if doctors are preventing nurses from becoming chief nursing officers or matrons.u act as if doctors are trying to relegate you.As if physiotherapists are not allowed to head their departments.being a consultant is not the highest post attainable by health workers in nigeria.an hospital appoints u as a consultant if they need you and u have the appropriate training.
What dey are saying is simple, you won't find a doctor doing a physio's job,so don't go near deirs.
The hospital is however based on team spirit,we need to work together no doubts.

How can this true, doctors have one of the most activist union in the Nigerian state. The activism of your union is second to only that of the oil and gas worker's union: pengansen.

Because activism is either the mother or offspring of politics: and politics is about resource allocation; about who get what, when, and how?

You may not be interested in such mundane things, but your Ogas at the Top of the hierarchy definitely are. They see the bigger picture and making way ahead for you guys.

double0seven: Even in US where nurses and pharmacists are allowed to function the proper way they are supposed to, it does not mean that their decision can override that of a Doctor. Doctors of course have superior authority in patient care.

and registered nurses probably function in their fullest capacity in areas where there are no doctors or situations where no doctors are around.

But here in Nigeria, the problem is the doctors don't even want to recognize anyone. They want to suppress everyone.

You make a bit of sense but you are still allowing your hatred of doctors to cloud your judgement.

Personally, am not against appointment of suitably qualified allied health professionals as consultants to hospitals according to needs. But in Nigeria, JOHESU is agitating for it in order to be able to claim the N150,000 specialist allowance and also in order to be able to antagonise doctors concerning patient care...the anarchy that NMA mentioned! Instances of the latter abound.

If that is the case, then they ought to be groundwork by government. There must be stringent requirements which has to be complied with before any of them can become a consultant.

The government or whomever are the people in charge should do that research.

Good.
Also, concerning headship of hospitals: all government need to do is separation of the offices of the CEO & the CMD. The CMD is a professional post for doctors just as Director of Nursing is for nurses.
The CEO(chief executive officer) will be a political appointee or otherwise open to any of the professions. shikena!

A medically-related course does not equate a degree in medicine & surgery or dentistry. But in Nigeria we are twisting the english language to suit our individual causes.

All parties must be ready for the truth!

Hnd should never equal BSc and that is a standard. Even in JAMB its 180 university and 150 polytechnics. O levels for university is 5 credits polytechnic 3 so how can they ask for parity?
Poly requires 4 credits and in some courses u must get the 5th one b4 graduating.

Tconphils: I'm a doctor. A good one at that , by His grace. I can tell you what this whole misunderstanding is about. Right from d early days of medical practice, its been d physician and his patient. Any other human being around is a helper( usually an individual without any training). Just like any other adventures of mankind, Medicine advanced( still growing ) in all ramifications but more importantly, the number of people needing medical attention on daily basis. This informed d need for trained medical personnels to assist the physicians . The laboratories: carry out tests requested by doctors. The nurses: monitor and give drugs prescribed by d doctor to d patient for the doctor and report back to him( if need be). Physiotherapist : carry out musculoskeletal exercises requested by d doctor for the patients. Pharmacists: sell drugs prescribed by doctors and REASON any irregularity in d prescription ( if any). Cleaners and security know there jobs. Read this: All doctors have basic training on all these areas ; pharmacology, laboratory medicine , physiotherapy ..all of them. We can do EVERYTHING a patient needs. Other health workers know this. But we chose to employ the services of nurses and others to lIGHTEN our burden. Health is doctors' innovation. It is like Microsoft to Bill Gate. We have the final say and this should never be compromised. Its a God given right to a doctor starting from d day He engraved enormous intelligence in us above equals. The world understand d complexity of life and ailments and dats y the world wide standard of preserving Medicine for the best brains. Believe me, I know what it takes to be and remain a doctor. We work for every bit of earnings we get. Nurses and patients know that. Health is all we have got. Our helpers cannot be our boss cos Dats wat this is about in Nigeria. Its unfair and its never heard of in other fields( Law, Religion, Universities, Engineering. etc). We are humans with feelings. Even now, I know that doctors are rendering services to patients in Nigeria. We do dat cos we know wat life is. This Govt is just a mess.
pls av u heard of the Apothecaries?

When a medical physicist (a consultant in radiology) is earning $200k and above per annum in US while a primary care physician is managing to take $180K per annum, people are here exhibiting ignorance about US payscale. These are individuals that have advanced there career from their humble being as radiographers. Every professional should be allowed to advance in his/her field. This medical physicist are also called resident/ consultants. I challenge any doctor here to tell us which specialty in medicine, be it either radiologist or oncologist has the training to handle the job of a medical physicist. That why the continue to roast cancer patients with wrong radiation doses in Nigeria in the name of delivering radiation doses. The simple physic in the radiologist board exam is the nightmare of every aspiring radiologist/oncologist. Dem no born any doctor well to attempt classical physics courses! QUOTE ME ANYWHERE.

Ignorance.why compare a radiographer to a primary care phydician(someone who may or may not hv had residency training)why don't u go ahead and compare with an intervention all cardiologist who makes 3ce that of ur medical physicist. And a radiologist is different from a radiographer both her and in the US.Get ur facts right nd stop being ignorant.have u heard of radiation oncology?smh

i dont see any reason for JOHESU claims. it is simple, if FG honours their agreement, let the doctors go on indefinite strike and allow JOHESU to treat patients.
Re: JOHESU Heads To National Industrial Court (NIC) by sonnie10: 1:01am On Jul 15, 2014
Mr doc., a medical physicist is a consultant in radiology. They spend 3 to 5 years in residency training and this is not even part of their PHD years. I know that this is not common in Nigeria but I am talking about the USA here, maybe you have a problem with understanding which I find troubling for a doctor. Let me give you a list of schools with these program so that you more educated. You may want check out their websites

Stanford University
Md Anderson Texas
Umasss Lowel Mass
Dukes University

These are all American schools with residency programs in Medical physics. I would advise you to limit your comments based on your little knowledge. I am not suggesting that you are a local champion!

FDenigma:

I politely disagree. JOHESU is a recent amalgamation of strange bedfellows whose only uniting bond is an inferiority complex directed at doctors.

Even within their ranks, they still tussle over who is "superior" (pharmacist better than Physio better than nurse, etc) as if that is what matters.

Most doctors didn't even know the union existed until they went on strike and locked up medical records and instruments. When doctors heard their absurd demands, they laughed...until FG approved all of them.

Unfortunately, as "underdogs", they seem to have public sympathy but let's call a spade a spade without emotions or "beef".

You know, sometimes, one has to be the bigger person when it comes to conflicts.I think right now NMA should be that bigger person. Its very obvious that JOHESU is acting as a result of inferiority complex. Anybody that has gone through their (JOHESU's) demands wouldn't need a translator to understand that the order at which work is being carried out in the hospitals is at the brink of distortion should any of their demands be considered.
But hey, there are other logical ways of addressing the issue. Striking shouldn't be the order of the day especially in the medical institutes. There are lives at stake here, you should know that better than I do.
Ps. Sorry for the late reply..I still dey learn how to use this nairaland grin

oga why are you ranting? in radiology primary, part one and part two, physics is a core part of the curriculum.
in my part one exams, physics had a separate paper.mcqs and theory.in the viva voce, one room is dedicated to physics.
we were taught by medical physicists from ghana and Nigeria.
medical physicists are not radiographers.
medical physics is a separate area of physics in which many people after acquiring the initial degree in physics go ahead and do a masters in medical physics.
the radiologists into therapy are called radiotherapists and they are still doctors who do residency in radiotherapy.

You have missed the point here. The premise of this discussion is whether allied health professional should be allowed to advance in their profession and become consultants. This is the issue at the center of NMA strike. Doctors are saying no, over there dead body would they see a radiographer become a consultant.
Ok. Dr. Erendu in Port Harcourt (google that name)is a radiographer who advanced to become a medical physicist (from a UK university, a more advanced country). To educated you the more, there is no Medical specialty with the title RADIOTHERAPIST. Doctors are either radiologist or oncologist. Only a radiographers can be called a radiotherapist and in some countries including the US, one could go directly into studying radiotherapy.

Again, because you had some introductory physics courses in medical school is not enough to even try equating yourself to a medical physicist. Do you even understand the level of advance mathematic courses you have to take as prerequisites to caught up with these level of physics courses. A radiologist in training does not have such foundation.

Just to put this very clearly, here is the step by step career advancement path for radiographers as is obtainable in most advanced countries
. 1) A two-year college to become a radiographer (associate degree) ---2) four-year college to become a radiotherapist (bachelors degree)----3) Masters degree to become a Dosimetrist and a PGD in biophysics. ---- 4 ) PHD in medical physics with a residency program

I hope I have educated YOU enough on this topic.
