The proposed World Fashion University to be established in Bayelsa State has been named after President Goodluck Jonathan in recognition of his administration’s achievements in all facets of the economy.

This was announced at the weekend during the closing ceremony and gala night of the three-day Africa Fashion Reception, held at the Banquet Hall of Government House in Yenagoa.

The Goodluck Jonathan World Fashion University would be equipped with a research centre, amphitheatre, faculty of social sciences, conference centre, textile plant building and sports complex, among other facilities.

Speaking at the event, Jonathan, who was represented by the Minister of Culture, Tourism and National Orientation, Edem Duke, expressed gratitude for the honour done him, describing the gesture as a milestone development. He noted that Africa had come of age in view of the number of notable designers, who had made a mark in the creative industry and must be given their pride of place in the world, as the industry contributes 40 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP) across the continent.

Underscoring the need for a policy of fair trade to grow economies in Africa, Jonathan solicited the support of men and women of goodwill to make the university a reality.

In his remarks, the Governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson, said his administration intended to make the state a key player in the tourism industry. Dickson said facilities such as the golf course, polo club and other infrastructure were being put in place to actualise the vision.

He said his administration was prepared to host one major international event monthly to place Bayelsa on the world tourism map and urged investors to explore the potentials that abound in the state, as Bayelsa is open for business. The governor said the state government would give appropriate support to models from the state, who participated at the event, to attend the forthcoming World Fashion Week in Paris, France, in September this year.
