WORKS AND THE LOT OF THE WICKED
TEXT: PROVERBS 3:25-33

"The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked: but He blesseth the habitation of the just" (PROVERBS 3:33).

The Book of Proverbs typically deals in contrasts: contrast between two categories of people - the wise and the foolish, the humble and the haughty, the diligent and the lazy, the righteous and the wicked. It also contrasts two different outcomes - wealth and poverty, promotion and demotion, life and death, blessings and curses.

Our text today presents two of such contrasts - the wicked and the just. It also presents their end - curses and blessings. In dealing with mankind, God promises either blessings or curses, depending on one's attitude and disposition towards the commandment of God. The wicked are identified by their works. According to our text, they are selfish, oppressive, inconsiderate and mischievous. The curse of God simply means a divine judgment against sin. It means God's displeasure, disapproval and discontent. It has physical, spiritual and eternal implications. All sinners are living under the curse of God. The proper response to the judgment of God is repentance and restitution. In Christ, all curses are revoked and the sinner is justified through faith. The just is qualified to receive the blessings of God.

Quote: "In Christ, all curses are revoked."

Chɑllenge: "The proper response to God's judgment is repentance."

Prɑyer: "Help me, Lord, to live for You"

DISCIPLINE AND DILIGENCE
TEXT: JOHN 9:1-9

"I must work the works of Him that sent Me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work" (JOHN 9:4).

Jesus Christ exemplified all the principles of success. He expressed a strong interest in His God-given assignment. He called it "my meat." This is desire. As soon as He began His earthly ministry, He identified His main objective - "to seek and save that which was lost." This is determination. He was committed to that one task, "the works of him that sent me." This is discipline. He was ready to exert Himself, spend and be spent - "I must work." This is diligence. He drew His strength from the resources provided by His Father in heaven - "The Son can do nothing of himself." This is dependence. No wonder within a space of three and a half years, His work was done and He declared, "It is finished."

True success in any endeavour would be a mirage or mere wishful thinking without application of these time-tested principles. A youth who is craving for a resounding and lasting success in life cannot do without discipline. He must be ready to subdue self, control his desires and say no to certain comforts in order to achieve his set goals.

Quote: "Be ready to subdue self."

Chɑllenge: "Success is a mirage without discipline and diligence."

Prɑyer: "Lord, help me to be diligent"

DEPART FROM STRONG DRINKS
TEXT: PROVERBS 31:1-7

"It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink" (PROVERBS 31:4).

What are the two worst habits that can destroy a young man? Or put it another way, what are the two most dangerous pitfalls a young man must avoid?

The mother of King Lemuel has the answer. Number one: Flee fornication. Number two: Depart from strong drinks. And the two are related. When you indulge in one, you will end up indulging in the other.

According to recent studies, among substances of abuse, alcohol ranked second, next only to tobacco. The prevalence of alcohol usage has increased steadily, and the average age of initiation has been dropping equally. According to the American Centre for Disease Control (CDC), underage drinking is a public health problem in the US.

There are many negative consequences of alcohol use and abuse among teenagers. It can lead to school problems such as high rates of absences and lower grades. It can lead to social problems like fighting, stealing and road crashes.

It also leads to risky behaviours such as immoral sexual relationships. It can lead to emotional or psychological problems like suicide and homicide. Thank God for Lemuel's mother's wise counsel.

Quote: "Depart from strong drinks."

Chɑllenge: "Drinking is a public health problem."

Prɑyer: "Lord, help me to heed the godly counsel against drinking"

QUITTING YOUR QUIET TIME?
TEXT: MARK 1:35-39

"And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed" (MARK 1:35).

Quiet Time is the time you spend alone with God to read His Word, share your heart with Him, and worship Him. It is a time of spiritual refreshment so that you can be filled with grace and strength to do all you have to do in your daily life. It keeps you healthy spiritually, emotionally and physically.

Quiet time is for your benefit, not God's. Although God longs to be with you, you are the one who will ultimately benefit from His presence during your quiet time. Many youths and students miss their quiet time. And one of the commonest reasons for this is lack of time or too much activities lined up for the day.

That was not the way of Christ. Despite His tight schedule and need to visit many towns and villages to preach the gospel and perform miracles, He gave quality time for personal devotion. He derived His strength from His time alone with God. That should be your practice. If you want to be fruitful and useful, don't quit your quiet time.

Quote: "Don't quit your quiet time."

Chɑllenge: "The quiet time is for your benefit."

Prɑyer: "Lord, ignite the passion for quiet time in my life"

EFFORT IS NEEDED FOR ENTRY
TEXT: LUKE 13:22-28

"Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able" (LUKE 13:24).

To strive is to fight or contend with an opponent. And that is what the Christian life entails. A true Christian is a soldier, and he must fight his way through the narrow gate until he reaches the celestial city. The fight is with his three principal enemies, which are the flesh, the world and the devil. These are his never-dying foes. Unless he gets his victory over them, he may not make it into the kingdom of heaven.

The fight is necessary because there is always a danger to fall back to sin even after conversion. The Christian carries within him a nature prone to evil, and a heart weak and unstable as water. "If he had a nature like an angel, and were not a fallen creature, the warfare would not be essential. But with a corrupt heart, a busy devil, and an ensnaring world, he must either fight or be lost," wrote J. C. Ryle.
No saint will be carried to heaven on a flowery bed of ease. All must fight to win the prize.

Quote: "Fight to win the prize."

Chɑllenge: "Heaven is worth striving for."

Prɑyer: "Lord, help me to hold on till the end"

COST OF DISCIPLESHIP
TEXT: LUKE 14:25-33

"For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?" (LUKE 14:28).

Christian discipleship is the process by which a disciple - a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ - grows in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ and is equipped by the Holy Spirit, who resides in his or her heart, to overcome the pressures and trials of this present life and become more and more Christ-like.

This process involves putting Jesus first in all things, following Christ's teachings, fruitfulness in life and ministry, love for other disciples, commitment to evangelism, and readiness to lay down one's life for the cause of Christ. Churches today house hundreds of people, but few disciples.

Following Jesus is not a walk in the park. It is an all-out commitment to abide by all the teachings and demands of Christ. It is also a voluntary decision.

Every convert or believer in Christ must be made to understand the implication of his or her decision to follow Christ. He or she must be acquainted with the cost of discipleship. And after counting the cost, he or she must decide to pick up his or her cross daily and follow Christ.

Quote: "Be acquainted with the cost of discipleship."

Chɑllenge: "Not all converts are disciples."

Prɑyer: "Help me, Lord, to remain committed"

PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH
TEXT: ROMANS 2:17-25

"Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?" (ROMANS 2:21).

The statement, talk is cheap, is a proverb that means it is easier to say that you will do something than to actually do it. It means to lay claim to a moral standard or belief to which one's own behaviour does not conform. This is hypocrisy.

Our text today paints the picture of such a hypocrite. He is called a Jew, rests in the law, and even boasts in God. He knows the will of God and approves of things that are excellent. He even claims to be a light to those in darkness and undertakes to teach the foolish and ignorant. But alas, he is guilty of the things he taught and condemned in others.

Jesus hates hypocrisy and condemned it in the strongest terms. It was the practice of the Pharisees of His day. They were full of words (leaves) but were devoid of deeds (fruits). That should not be the way of a Christian. A Christian should learn from Jesus who began both to do and teach (Acts 1:1). He should endeavour to be a doer of the word, and not just a teacher or hearer.

Quote: "Be a doer of the word."

Chɑllenge: "Jesus hates hypocrisy."

Prɑyer: "Make me a doer of Your word, Oh Lord"

HONEST HARD WORK HONOURED
TEXT: MATTHEW 25:14-21

"His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord" (MATTHEW 25:21).

In 1882, Peter J. McGuire, a labour union leader, proposed the creation of a "Labour Day" holiday to celebrate and honour the American worker. Today, the 'Workers Day' is celebrated by various countries all over the world on different days to honour and recognise the contribution of workers to national development.

The term, dignity of labour, implies that all types of jobs are respected equally, and no occupation is considered superior, and no job should be discriminated against on any basis. God commands that man should labour and do all his works. Even before the fall, God demanded that Adam should till the ground and tend the Garden of Eden.

A Christian should not be a loafer. He or she should be a hard worker. The tendency of some preachers to make believers depend on miracles of 'sowing seed' or seeking breakthroughs in life without honest hard work, is unscriptural. You cannot give and pray yourself into breakthrough when you are not committed to an honest hard work. The word of God is clear - you must work before you eat. You can only reap where you have sowed. There is no shortcut to this law.

Quote: "You must work before you eat."

Chɑllenge: "There is dignity in labour."

Prɑyer: "Lord, help me to be an honest worker"

POWER OF CORPORATE PRAYERS
TEXT: ACTS 12:5-11

"Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him" (ACTS 12:5).

The Bible states that, "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." It follows then that the effectual fervent prayers of two or more righteous people will avail even much more. When two or three individuals gather and pray in the name of Christ, it is called corporate prayers.

Both the Old and New Testaments recommend and require that a whole congregation should pray to God on specific subjects. It is a great thing for God's people to gather together to pray as their prayers will accomplish much.

Following the corporate prayers of Esther, her maidens and the Jews, disaster was averted, and the hunter became the hunted (Esther 4:16). When the king of Nineveh proclaimed a national day of fasting and prayers, there was national revival and reversal of divine judgment (Jonah 3:1-10).

When Daniel mobilized his brethren to join him in prayers, the secret of the Lord was made known to him (Daniel 2:17, 18). In our text today, the effectual, fervent prayer of the Church delivered a minister from death in the hands of King Herod.

Quote: "A whole congregation should pray."

Chɑllenge: "Congregational prayers will accomplish much."

Prɑyer: "Lord, help me to be a partaker of fervent prayers"

GIVE THANKS TO GOD
TEXT: 1 THESSALONIANS 5:14-22

"In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you" (1 THESSALONIANS 5:18).

Gratitude is an attitude of the heart that makes us appreciate God or man for blessings or favours received from them. Appreciating God and giving Him credit in good times, thanking and glorifying Him for His wonderful gifts and graciousness is easy and understandable. But many struggle to find the reason to thank Him during suffering, tragedies and losses.

Yet, our text admonishes that in everything, we should give thanks to God. The Scriptures further instruct that we give thanks to God always and for all things (Ephesians 5:20). All things are not equally good, but all things are thankworthy.

Whatever happens to us as allowed by God, has a purpose or reason behind it, and is part of God's overall plan. Provided we are in the will of God, whatever He allows our way is for our ultimate good. We should therefore give thanks to God because of His creation, the gift of life, His deliverances, protection and provisions. We thank Him because He commands it and expects it. Thanking God in all our circumstances attracts more blessings.

Quote: "All things are thankworthy."

Chɑllenge: "Give thanks to God always."

Prɑyer: "In all things, help me to thank You, Lord"

HELP ATTRACTS HELP
TEXT: EXODUS 2:15-22

"And the shepherds came and drove them away: but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock" (EXODUS 2:17).

Our text presents Moses, who fled from Pharaoh in Egypt to the land of Midian, to escape death. As he sat by a well, the daughters of Reuel, the priest of Midian, came to water their father's flock. The young women met opposition from some shepherds who drove away their flocks. Moses, who was melancholic, rose up and helped them to overcome the shepherds. He drew water and watered their flocks to their amazement.

When Reuel's daughters told him of the help and kindness Moses obliged them, he invited Moses to his house and rewarded him with shelter, job and a wife. What a challenge to Christian youths! Indeed, help attracts help.

As a youth, opportunities abound in your family, school, place of work, community and the church to render help to others. You don't have to be buoyant and comfortable before helping other people. Like Moses, seize every opportunity to help somebody. Above all, God expects you to help unbelieving youths with the gospel, towards receiving Christ as their Lord and Saviour. Great will be your reward if you obey.

Quote: "Help somebody."

Chɑllenge: "Be ready to help others."

FROM VICTORY TO VICTORY
TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 17:31-37

"Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God" (1 SAMUEL 17:36).

Joel Osteen quoted, "The first place we must win the victory is in our own minds. If you don't think you can be successful, then, you never will be." This quote fits succinctly with the life of David.

In our text, David, sent by his father, went to visit his brothers in the war between Israel and the Philistines. David witnessed, with chagrin, the arrogant threats of Goliath to Israeli soldiers, and resolved to fight Goliath. King Saul gave him no chance, but declaring his undaunted faith in God, and past victories, he was allowed to fight Goliath, whom he defeated. David moved from victory to victory. What a challenge to Christian youths!

Life is full of battles. They come in different ways. You may experience challenges in health, finance and academics, among others. No matter how ferocious the battles, like David, you can go from victory to victory with undaunted faith in God. Philippians 4:13 says, "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." Remain faithful to God, and you will go from victory to victory.

Quote: "You can go from victory to victory."

Chɑllenge: "Faithfulness to God guarantees victory."

Prɑyer: "Lord, give me strength to win all battles of life"

"Et Tu Brute?" (And you too, Brutus?). This was an exclamation by Julius Caesar during his assassination by eight plotters, including Brutus, his friend. As the assassins attacked Caesar, the stab of Brutus was the most heart-breaking, coming from his most trusted friend. What a betrayal from a friend!

Have you been offended or betrayed by a trusted friend? It is believed that offences from a close friend hurt most, and are harder to pardon than those from mere acquaintances, and they usually destroy relationships. Offences are common phenomena in life. Our text says "A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle" (Proverbs 18:19).

As a Christian youth, you must be ready to forgive anyone who offends you. The Scripture admonishes, "Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye" (Colossians 3:13). Guard your relationships well. Avoid disagreements and offences. Remember the words of Alexander Pope: "To err is human, to forgive is divine."

Quote: "Guard your relationships well."

Chɑllenge: "Be ready to forgive offences."

Prɑyer: "Help me Lord, to guard against disagreements and offences"
