WHAT?! Whoever heard of talking to little kids about sex? Sex talk with older kids is uncomfortable enough for parents, and now for the little ones?!

Many parents may be thinking along the lines above. As modern as we may think we are, truth is that we’ll probably feel shy about discussing this topic with our kids. Still, it’s a must-do, especially in today’s world where they get AMPLE (and often distorted, misleading) information about it from media and internet. It’s up to you to demystify the Sex issue so your child is not easily swayed by what is taught by outside influences.

Now, the first thing to know is that sex-talk does not always have to be a ‘Sex-talk’ thing. What does this mean?

It means you probably don’t want to put down ‘sex-talk’ on your to-do list, dedicating a specific time and location to it. This only creates a tense and serious atmosphere that may not help in passing your message to the kid. Let sex and sexuality teachings be as spontaneous as possible. Look out for opportunities to teach something or the other. And of course, “one thing at a time” should be best here.

Other tips that you may find helpful include:

*** Don’t over-react even when the child asks something you think is totally beyond his years.

*** If your child asks a question related to sex, don’t laugh, giggle or do anything to make him feel embarrassed or regret asking.

*** Be brief. Don’t go into a long explanation. Answer in simple terms. Your 4-year old doesn’t need to know the details of intercourse.

CATCHING THE HUG 'BUG'

*** Be honest. Use proper names for all body parts discussed.

*** Listen to your child’s responses and reactions.

*** Be prepared to repeat yourself.

*** Encourage his curiosity by asking him if he needs to know more. Find out if he’s satisfied by your answers to his questions.
