The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) is set to admit about 9,000 students who sat for the 2014 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for the 2014/2015 academic session.

This rapid increase in admission has been attributed to the massive improvement in infrastructure and the commitment of the staff members in assisting the institution to provide a qualitative academic environment for its students.

It's not 100,000. Only 44,000+ scored 180+.

So, it's 9,000 out of 44,000.

The main problem is not funding but a faulty educational system.

A well structured educational system will produce well trained students whose project works will help develop marketable global products that addresses global challenges and generate lots of cash that can help run our universities.

How can we restructure our educational system.

1) Let's teach our kids how things work and are produced.

2) Basic Engineering-Technology should be taught from primary 1- 200level and it should focus totally on how things work and are produced.

3) Real and computer video learning/teaching materials should be made compulsory in order to help students have a clear picture of how things work and are produced.

4) In year 1 and 2, Basic Engineering-Technology should be streamlined to each departmental technology in other words an Elect/Elect student should be taught things pertaining to how Elect/Elect things work and are produced.

Sir even if the govt spends trillions on technical/vocational schools, the technology taught in Nigeria technical and Vocational schools can't help Nigeria to catch up with modern technology.

Examples of things taught in these schools are tailoring welding bricklayer carpentering repairs/maintenance of mechanic/electric appliances etc which are mainly finished/consumer goods and services.

It is different from teaching students how a/an electric- bulb- iron- fridge, engines submarines, jet engines, computers etc works and are produced. Which are mainly capital goods and services.

Technical/Vocational educational is taken seriously in other West Africa nations which is the major reason why for example a Ghanian electrician will do a better job than a Nigerian.

But that form of education haven't helped eg Ghanians from developing more advanced technology as listed above.

But when they spend more, the mode of teaching tends to change and possibly white teachers could set in

More money do not change the mode of teaching eg Nigerians pay hell in Ghanian universities but how many advanced technology have they developed that is sold worldwide.

Another example is our private universities. Despite the huge investment and affliation to some foreign universities and lecturers, we can't still boast of graduates that can develop marketable technological products.

So stop thinking that more money will address the issue.

Pls teach our students on how technological things work and are produced, in 20 years we will catch up with the rest of the world.

YOU CAN NEVER PRODUCE A THING WHICH YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW IT WORKS OR BEING PRODUCED.

Then I guess u're suggesting that white teachers should be employed because they are more enlightened in practical areas than us.

No

Pls read my 1st and 2nd post in order to see the perceptive am presenting.

We live in an information age in which a man can learn lots of stuff through the internet from people who are willing to share their ideas.

So the issue is not about white or black lecturers but about bringing out the engineering-technological spirit in us. Which can be easily achieved by teaching students how things work and being produced.

Eg how many JSS 1 students can explain how an electric bulb works, why different coloured bulbs give different colours etc
