The New Age Of Nigerian Music by Wani95(m): 11:39am On Jul 09, 2014
Skip to the bottom for a cool jam!!!
Over the years and most especially in recent times, we have all witness as Nigeria's version of Afro Beat/Hiphop/Pop has greatly evolved to a more modern style that's in tune with music worldwide. Artist such as D'Banj, Don Jazzy, P Square, Wizkid and so on have broken certain barriers we have experienced over many years and paved the way for other Nigerian artists to get some international recognition as well. That goes to show you that anything is possible if you believe to be honest.

These artists would have only dreamed of one day sharing a studio, let alone a stage, with artists of such international caliber, form decent friendships or bonds and get on each others tracks to embrace cultural diversity and international music at all corners of our globe. Now various foreign sounds that may not be exactly understood at once can be pulled together and make international music that we as individuals have never heard or even imagined possible. That also goes to show you, the music is as limitless as ones creativity and imagination.

However, with all these doors that have been opened, we still have in our country today, music that is entirely dependent on its background instrumentals. Although containing lyrics, the lyrics are entirely weak, containing repetitions or ill placed words that lack the main vine or root of music...content. In other words, the instrumentals contain the content, that touches you, puts you in a kind of vibe and you bring out your own interpretations of the sounds you hear. The lyrics however do a poor job of interpreting the instrumentals itself.

Not to slander this type of music, as it is as good as any other and practiced everywhere else, we have to ask ourselves "Is It Every Time"
In a country where people make albums after albums with only one or two songs containing any form of lyrical content, musicians are beginning to see this as the easy way out. I mean, hop on a beat, spit a couple repetitive lyrics and release that as a single to get you some quick money, mainly taking advantage of the fact that we as Nigerians love to party and jam all the time. Does that really mean that we won't once in a while like to chill out and listen to mind blowing or mind opening lyrics? Of course not!

We have shown many times that we do like content, as we adore our various international musicians and the content that they bring out. We love their songs as much as heir nationals do, so why shouldn't we appreciate our own Nigerians who give us lyrical content, we aren't primitive. I mean for some musicians, it is what they do best, I say this referring for example to all the previous members of the now disbanded mo'hits, Iyanya an so on. But some others, I won't mention, sound so lost in their songs and look so lost in their videos, that we'd rather have the instrumentals playing over their voices and they kept shut during the videos, because they don't know what they're saying or understand what they're singing, but they still get paid.

Although, artist like Jesse Jagz, MI, Naeto C, Burna Boy and now Phyno have shown the importance of having some content in your songs, it seems like this is still an issue in Nigerian music. I believe it's the unwilling nature of man to accept change and modernize. So it must truly be left to the younger generation to bring up this switch in music, modernize the sounds we have and make them eligible to compete on an international level. That being said, we have seen young artists already making their impact in music, with types of songs we have never heard before as the new Afro HipHop/R&B/Pop, our own new AfroBeat.

Upcoming artist WaniOTB describes himself as a new type of singer/songwriter/rapper and producer, focused on creating a mixture of sounds from all around the world and adding the little locality that we all know and love to push out a modern sound for all to enjoy. Music that contains truth, feeling, achievements, shortcomings, love, hate, pulling out the sides of life that we all think of at all times, whether it's on the depth of our lives or the shallow feats of our thoughts, our desire to succeed or the wild nights we love to have.

This first unofficial single was released and aimed at those who have a desire for hardcore tight rap and flow. A cover of international musician Mac Miller's Gees, WaniOTB is bent on letting others know he's not in the game for the fun, setting himself aside as a different kind of musician, who's almost found where he stands, while at the same time, stating out a few guilty pleasures that we might not all be comfortable with, but he won't hide who he is. Mind you, the musical diversity doesn't end there, as he is also one who creates along the lines of down tempo smooth music, but when you want yo come out, you come out tough, or no one will take you serious.
