It was bad day devil take water . I was still in JSS class but brothers who were in the university told me stories and i knew what happened in other institutions concerning issue of cultists because it got to the peak at this time. The incident lead to the end of tenure for the then VC (forgotten his name now) who was accused of begin the sponsore and god father for them. I heard one of the cultists was caught and he saw hell.

In other institutions, all suspected cultists faced panel and most of them rusticated. All guys who wear a kind of rough look were adviced to stop visiting dark places and go out in odd hours. Some were picked up and beaten up in most schools .
Every year OAU dont miss the remembrance / kindle light. In actual fact that was the beginning of the end to cultism in Nigeria higher institutions. It opened the eyes of the whole world to the dangers of cultism. And now , in OAU ,u hardly see tug let alone cultist , when caught , they will teach him all the morals he missed from his childhood within hours . Even when a thief is caught in OAU he will curse the day he was born let alone a suspected cultist .

The OAU Students Union reiterates its stance against cultism and state sponsored assault and repression. Hence, in respect of the July 10 remembrance of the OAU 5 that were gruesomely murdered on 10th July,1999 by cultists and elements of state oppression, the following are the events slated by the leadership of the Union for the day:
1. Press engagement @ NUJ Correspondence Chapel by 12 noon immediately after the NUJ Congress to receive more press coverage.

2. Candle Light procession and exposition on the July 10 saga by some past union leaders.

Procession moves from Awo to SUB. Awo hall so designated being the scene of the killing .Exposition holds at SUB.

ALUTA CONTINUA...VICTORIA ASCERTA..

It is fifteen years today when some armed cultists stormed Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife and killed five students in the wee hours of July 10, 1999. The slain students were George ‘Yemi’ Iwilade, the then General Secretary, OAU Students Union, Tunde Oke, a member of Democratic Socialist Movement (DSM), Efe Ekede, Eviano Ekelemu and Yemi Ajiteru. Lanre Adeleke, the then President of the OAU Students Union and a member of the DSM, escaped by a whisker by quickly running out of his room having heard gunshots apparently aimed at Ajiteru who slept outside a few rooms away.

There was a serious allegation that these blood-thirsty campus gangsters, members of Neo-Black Movement (), were sponsored by the then Vice-Chancellor of the university, who was later disgraced out of office. Omole had had a serious running battle with the Students Union led by Lanre Adeleke over independent student unionism, welfare conditions, financial recklessness and reinstatement of Anthony Fasayo and other student activists who had been politically victimized since 1995. Indeed, one of the cultists, Kazeem Bello, aka Kato, confessed that Wale Omole had a hand in their July 10 dastardly operation.
The question that everyone keeps asking is, who killed Iwilade and the rest of the students.-

Reporting live

kenifeh: I remember the famous speech made by Comrade Moses Oisakede, late NANS President, "How can we say goodbye? ...Welldone and not goodbye". Little did he know that Nigeria Students will re-echo the same eulogy at his funeral.
I remeber how Lanre Lagacy, former OAU Union President, escaped death by whiskers.
I remember how this incidence cost Wole Omole, former Vice Chancellor, his job.

You will always remain in our minds. Adieu Gallant fighters!!!

More stories

Barrywilly: It was a terrible day. I lost my friend and colleague, George Iwilade aka Africa, because of his bushy hair and refusal to wear black and white as we were forced to wear as law students. He was in 300 level then. Machete was not used on him, but his head was shattered bc of the close range shot. He was killed in Awo hall short after he retired to bed around 2:30am during a world keggites gyration nite. He was eloquent and SUG Sec Gen and heir apparent to Lanre Legacy. Others killed include Efe 200 level psychology, Ajitoni xtra year student. Eviano was killed in Faj Hall for no just reason other than running accidentally into the cultists on the staircase. May their souls rest in peace. Please note, no one was convicted for their murders. But at least two cultists were killed by the students in a retaliatory attacks.

On Iwilade George Afrika

dolphinife:

BROS, lemme explain the little i knw about the incidence to you for your understanding.

Before 1999 incidence, OAU is the headquarters of cult groups. The cult groups were very oppressive and aggressive. The students studied under fear and threat to peace and safety. It got to a stage that nobody could stand up to face these cultists. Then, Iwilade came to the fore. He was a law student and immediately he got admitted, he joined the student union and was very proactive.

As a law student, the students were suppose to be in black and white dress code, but he refuse this dress code and opted for native dress which single him out from the masses. The lecturers frustrated him because of this dress code and thereafter, he sue the school management and faculty of law to court stressing that he has the right to wear anything he felt he loved. He unilaterally won this case through the instrumentality of Gani Fawehinmi. From this time onward, he was seen as a thorn in the flesh of the school management.

Immediately he became the secretary of the student union, he rallied the students against the cultists. i was tod that because his father was an herbalist, he(iwilade) was able to confront these cultists head-long. Before you know it, the cultists from other institutions felt threatened by this single boy and decided to deal with him. So a plan was deviced to strike on the day of WORLD KEGGITE DAY because they knew that iwilade was a prominent member of the group.

On the day of this keggite day, Iwilade was so drunk that he has to be taken to his room to sleep being late in the night. immediately afterwards, the cultists struck and made way to iwilade's room and killed him. On the day of his burial, he's father said had it been that his son was not drunk, nobody can ever kill him.

contrary to this story, there was no love lost between the VC and Iwilade and we were told that the VC was head-bent to take iwilade out of his way, and the plan was executed with mastery. AJE KE LANA, OMO KU LONI......TA NI KO MO PE AJE ANA LO PA OMO JEE

THAT'S MY SUBMISSION

I was there but fast asleep, in Fajuyi hall. I stayed up late that night so I didn't wake up immediately when the shooting started. By the time I woke up, all my room-mates except one had fled. I was like, "what's up" but the other room-mate asked me to switch off the lights. We survived. The next morning, we visited the scene of the attack in Awo hall. The attackers used shotguns. They shot the door lock on one of the rooms and the pellets made a mess on the other side. We saw The bloody mattress on which their main target was shot in the head. I saw a guy from that room, I think, who was still alive but was seriously wounded, bleeding and not getting any help. I heard about a brilliant medical student who was shot for being in the wrong place during the attack. As he bled to death, he cried for a knife so he could use it to operate on himself and stop the bleeding. No one responded because they were either in the bushes or too scared to help. So he died.
