Destilo: Tips on French pronounciation

It is very important for all those learning French Language to pay attention to the following pronounciation guides and tips.It should be noted that most of the tips are just to guide learners since it is not possible to represent French sounds accurately using English spelling.

1. In french, consonants especially B, C, D, F, G, H, T, S, X and Z are not often pronounced at the end f French words for example::::
a. Paris-is pronounced "Pa-ri" in french.
b. Parent - is pronounced "pa-ron"..(its consist of nasal vowel "en"wink meaning "parent"
c. bas-is pronounced as "ba" meaning "down, low etc"
yeah thats kinda my challenge right now, pronunciation.
I'll just keep practising.

J'habite à Abuja.
Meaning.... I live in Abuja... (à means at/in)
pronounced....jah-bit-ah-abuja.

Et toi? Or Et vous?......Meaning
And you? For both "et toi" and "et vous"
pronounced.....eh-twa? Or. eh vuh?

Therefore;

J'habite à Abuja et vous?

J'habite à Ado-Ekiti

The most important thing is the pronounciation.
U dont read french like English. When we get to the rules,you will understand.....pronounce it out so that you will be used to it.
Do not be ashamed to speak the little you know, be proud of it.
Even if you make mistakes....don't be discouraged, we learn from our mistakes.

French accent

There are four French accents for vowels and one accent for a consonant. For specific information on what the accents do to change the pronunciation of the letters they modify.

The accent aigu (´ )(acute accent) can only be on an "E", e.g., étudiant (male student).

The accent grave (` )(grave accent) can be found on an A, E, or U. On the A and U, it usually serves to distinguish between words that would otherwise be homographs; e.g., ou (or) vs où (where) pronounce as "who"

The accent circonflexe (ˆ) (circumflex) can be on an A, E, I, O, or U. It serves to distinguish between homographs; e.g., du (contraction of de + le) vs dû (past participle of devoir).(we will come to dis soon)

The accent tréma (¨) (dieresis or umlaut) can be on an E, I, or U. It is used when two vowels are next to each other and both must be pronounced separately..as in sylabus, e.g., naïve, Saül...pronounce as na-if, sa-ul.

The cédille (¸) (cedilla) is found only on the letter C. It changes a hard C sound (like K) into a soft C sound (like S), e.g., garçon. The cedilla is never placed in front of E or I, because C always sounds like an S in front of these vowels.

It is essential to put accents in their proper places - an incorrect or missing accent is a spelling mistake just as an incorrect or missing letter would be. The only exception to this is capital letters, which are often left unaccented.
Echante'e Destilo. Bon nuit.
