Without these important crop protection and pest control technologies, U.S. food production would decline, many fruits and vegetables would be in short supply, and the price of food would rise. What’s more, America’s production of important fibers for clothing, such as cotton, would decrease as farmers would lose their harvests and livelihoods to crop pests and diseases.

We will continue to help coordinate a cooperative for the community to grow and dry fruit in rural Nigeria. We have an exporter and our vision is to take a product that farmers are already growing – and simply increase its value by bringing it to consumers who care about what they eat, and from where it comes. This enables farmers, including Buppala school, direct to the community. The community then has the opportunity to invest in their own local infrastructure, education and other endeavours as they see fit.

Consumer benefits – Pesticides allow consumers to consume high-quality produce that is free of insect blemishes and insect contamination. Crop protection chemicals that reduce and, in some cases, eliminate, insect damage allow the consumer to purchase high-quality produce free of insect fragments.

Plantain production in Nigeria is still very much in the hands of small scale farmers who incorporate it into different farming systems. The effort of these farmers should be collaborated with a good and adequate social infrastructure, like better roads and transport and efficient extension services. Future research on plantains should address the issue of intensive cropping and nutrient and water requirements to increase productivity both on-station and on-farm with farmers’ participation. This will assist in meeting the ever increasing demand of this crop by both household consumers and the new small scale industries. With the recent interest in establishment of plantain farms, as evident by the increase in cultivation/harvested areas, the country’s productivity will be tripled in the next few years. It is believed that the country will for a long time be one of the highest producers of plantain around the world.

Plantains are vegetatively propagated, most often from suckers (shoots that grow from a bud at the base of the plant) or from corms (underground bulbs known as rhizomes). The use of whole corms is very laborious so it is more common to grow from small pieces of corm. There are three different types of banana suckers which are produced by the mother plant; maidenheads, sword suckers and water suckers. Maidenheads have a large pseudostem which does not produce fruit. Sword suckers have a narrow base, short pseudostem and narrow, blade-like leaves. They produce healthy, fruitful pseudostems when they mature Water suckers have short pseudostems and broad leaves. Water suckers are not strongly attached to the rhizome and generally produce weaker plants and less fruit. Maidenheads and large sword suckers are preferred over water suckers.Read more on www.sedulusplantainsucker.com.ng

plantain to the income of rural households in major producing areas in Nigeria
continue to increase tremendously in the last few years. Unlike some other starchy
staples whose demand tend to fall with rising income, demand for plantain increases
with increasing income. With the potential for industrial processing of plantain,
which has recently been adopted, and the increased interest in production by small
and large scale farms in the country, it is believed that Nigeria will continue to be
one of the worlds largest producers of plantain.

STEP 1. CONSTRUCTION OF PROPAGATORS Propagators are used for sprouting of new seedlings and hardening of the subsequent sprouts. Simple propagators can be constructed using fairly cheap materials, such as bamboo and polythene sheets. Enterprising banana seedling producers could use iron rods and cast a concrete floor. It is important that at least 50% shade is provided and that the fragile seedlings are well-protected, by constructing a shade above the propagators. A convenient size for a propagator is 1.5 (width) x 5.0 (length) x 1 (height) meter. Propagators should be kept clean and completely covered with transparent polyethylene sheets. Humidity and temperature should be high. The propagator compartments can be made using wood or bricks and should measure not more than 0.5 m in height. For Step 2,34 etc Contact us or download full eBook on our website portal:www.sedulusplantainsucker.com.ng

Split corm technique is applied to corms that are about to flower or that are already harvested. The meristem is absent while buds are present. Propagation is by means of bud manipulation. The whole corm is harvested and pared. Exposed buds on top are scarified. Leaf sheets do not need to be removed. The corm is fragmented into two or more bits, depending on its size, and planted in the chamber for buds to sprout. Prepared corm pieces are planted at 10 cm intervals and covered with 2 cm of sawdust. The chamber is well watered immediately after planting.

Sanitation: Use clean planting material. Ensure that suckers to be used for planting new fields are free from pests.Remove all trash from suckers and pare the corm to remove all roots and discoloured portions. Pared suckers are further dipped in a 4% Triazophos, Basudin or Vydate L solution. Allow suckers to dry for at least twenty I four hours become.Suckers so treated will be protected against weevil attack for.
