AFFILIATE MARKETING:
what is it all about?

- Affiliate marketing is a type of performance-based marketing in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought by the affiliate's own marketing efforts.

- Simply put, it is a type of Internet business that pays you for promoting or for bringing somebody to visit or buy product from their site.
OR
- An internet-based system where you (as an affiliate) get paid for referring sales or customers to another business.

It might interest you to know that the industry has four core players namely:
  A. The merchant (also known as 
        retailer' or 'brand')
  B.  The network (that contains offers
         for the affiliate to choose from
        and also takes care of the
        payments)
  C.  The publisher (also known as
         the affiliate') and
  D.  The customer.

Over the years the market has grown in complexity, resulting in the emergence of a secondary tier of players, including affiliate
management agencies, super-affiliates and specialized third party vendors .

It is on record that Affiliate marketing overlaps with other Internet
marketing methods to some degree, because affiliates often use regular advertising methods.
Those methods include organic search engine optimization (SEO), paid search engine marketing
(PPC - Pay Per Click), e-mail marketing, content marketing and in some sense display advertising .

Difference between Affiliate Marketing and Referral Marketing.

It might also interest you to know that often Affiliate marketing is commonly confused with referral marketing , as both forms of marketing use third parties to drive sales to the retailer.
However, both are distinct forms of marketing and the main difference between them is that:

Affiliate Marketing relies purely on financial motivations to drive sales  
                          while
Referral Marketing relies on trust and personal relationships to drive sales.

With affiliate marketing you don't really need to have a website, but if you do have, well that could be an added advantage for making more money. There are loads of different ways to do affiliate marketing and many of them don’t involve owning a website – but most affiliates prefer to
have their own website or digital real estate as the case may be. If you have your own website, you talk about different affiliate products – recommend them to readers, give
detailed reviews, make comparisons and so on.

As an affiliate you’ll have a special link, known as an affiliate link, for every product that you’re promoting. Affiliate links have tracking in them to make sure that you get credited with every sale you make. When someone clicks your affiliate link, then the merchant knows it was you who sent the customer.

Your job as an "affiliate" is to be the middleman between online consumers and merchant's products. By aligning consumers with the
products they are looking for, you get a commission for every sale from the merchant through an Affiliate Program.

Let me stress that affiliate links don’t affect the customer at all… they don’t pay more, they don’t miss out on anything, and they will most likely
never know that they purchased through an affiliate link.

All it means is that when a customer buys something within a certain time period after clicking on your affiliate link, you get the commission.

on your links.

The aim of the game is to get your traffic to climb…because the more traffic you get the more clicks and sales you will make.

Affiliate Marketing is a great opportunity to earn money online as well as have the freedom of owning your own business and working at
home with next to nothing in start up costs but it takes commitment and it is not a get rich quick scheme.
