Nigeria's Boko Haram 'controls' Damboa in Borno

Nigeria's militant Islamists are in control of the key town of Damboa in north-eastern Nigeria, a local vigilante leader has told the BBC.

The vigilante force defending the town fled on Sunday, and Islamist group Boko Haram's black flag is now flying over Damboa, he said.

At least 40 people were killed when Boko Haram attacked Damboa on Friday, the vigilante leader added.

The group has been fighting since 2009 to create an Islamic state in Nigeria.

The military is said to lack the equipment to fight Boko Haram

The BBC's Chris Ewokor in the capital, Abuja, says when Boko Haram seized towns and villages in the past, it was driven out by the military.

However, government forces have failed to launch an offensive to recapture Damboa, he says.
'Checkpoints'

It is one of the biggest towns in Borno state and a busy trading centre for people from neighbouring villages.

Meanwhile, a military helicopter flying in Borno state's Bama area crashed after developing a technical fault, the defence ministry says.

It did not give details on casualties.

During the fighting in Damboa, some electric installations were damaged and this has left the regional capital, Maiduguri, without electricity for the past three weeks, a local resident has told the BBC.

Damboa is about 85km (53 miles) from Maiduguri, the headquarters of Boko Haram before it was driven out by government forces last year.
In April, it sparked international outrage by abducting more than 200 girls from their boarding school in Chibok, in Borno state, like Damboa.

Who are Boko Haram?

Founded in 2002
Initially focused on opposing Western education - Boko Haram means "Western education is forbidden" in the Hausa language
Launched military operations in 2009 to create Islamic state
Thousands killed, mostly in north-eastern Nigeria - also attacked police and UN headquarters in capital, Abuja
Some three million people affected
Declared terrorist group by US in 2013

The vigilante leader, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisals, told the BBC that Boko Haram gunmen had set up checkpoints on roads to Damboa and were charging motorists a toll fee.

Roads from Damboa lead to Boko Haram's base in the Sambisa forest, where the abducted schoolgirls are believed to be held, as well as Chibok.

The vigilante forces abandoned the town after running out of ammunition.

Boko Haram's flag had been hoisted outside the home of Damboa's traditional ruler, and the town's entrance, he said.

The group had also seized the military barracks, which government soldiers had abandoned after an earlier attack by the militants, the vigilante leader added.

President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency last year in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states, saying it would give the military extra powers to fight Boko Haram.

However, the insurgency has become more deadly since then.

New York-based Human Rights Watch says at least 2,053 civilians have been killed in an estimated 95 attacks during the first half of 2014, compared with 3,600 deaths in the first four years of the conflict.

A very good reason why Jonathan should not visit Chibok or Borno state entirely.

I cannot imagine how any African Nation let alone rag-tag Bokoharam can hold territory in Nigeria. I can only surmise that Bokoharam holds territory - if they do - because Nigeria wants them to for some unknown reason.

Just how does a group like Bokoharam - illiterates, kids, rapists and thieves armed with assault rifles and RPG's hold territory in a place like Nigeria where there are tanks, warplanes, and combined forces of over 90,000 men ? I can only suppose that they run away when Nigerian soldiers come and when Nigerians soldiers leave they return, kill innocent men and children and plant flag. If so, Nigeria has to do some original thinking. Since Bokoharam espouses a medieval way of life , we build castles to protect the villagers. I'm serious. We turn outskirts communities into medieval fortress. We build castles surrounded by motes and thick walls and manned by soldiers. During the day villages live in their normal houses,do their normal things such as shopping, farming etc but at Night they sleep in the castle fortress whiles some soldiers leave the fortress and patrol the villages. The army stationed in these fortresses drill and train the vigilantes at the fortress enabling them to be adequately armed with rifles.

Since sabotage is a major fear and one whose scope is far more damaging than the actual sabotage, the military has to device a way to limit information to the fewest commanders it can so that everyone is clear where the buck stops.

....i don't know, maybe the commander in chief plans missions with two others. When mission is planned commander in chief calls for commander appointed to lead mission and hands him envelope with the instructions. This way, all are clear who the holders of information are and consequently where leaks may derive is narrowed...

undecided don't look at me I'm not military

Pictures like these give me the shivers. Reminds me of the movie "blood diamonds", which is actually like an excerpt from the Sierreleon war.

I wonder how its possible that Bokoharam would grow from day to day without the help of the military especially their sympathizers in faith.

Another thing Bokoharam is too comfortable. We have to make life jittery for them. One way of doing this is to train groups of soldiers self sufficiency and send them into enemy territory. Maybe something like twenty groups of ten; highly trained survival specialist, send them into sambisa forest to search and kill, and set booby traps. Groups of soldiers will never know where the other groups are because all will continually be moving, thus frustrating mole activities.

The army should seriously consider bootstraps as a strategy. Booby trap APC's and MRAPS so that even if moles alert Bokoharam, Bokoharam will forever never be confident of what they are capturing or stealing from base. Insert tracking devices in certain equipments destined to be made available for Bokoharm to steal or capture

take a look again at balloon technology as possible tools of reconnaissance and Arial spying and photography

Hell, consider paper-kites....nothing is too daft if you look into it and think of what use you can make of it. The only daft thing is to belive that only what has been used elsewhere, that has track record, is of any use

Never, ever trust our so-called allies whether Western or African......

I'm too educated, I will only hinder the military by looking to Abuja for more wages instead of honoring my profession, my fallow soldiers and officers, my Nation or giving my life to protect women and children if the situation called for it. I would be too into tweeter and other social media and i would take my orders and war-front perspective from people who write online that Nigeria is not worth dying for. And at the slightest opportunity i would drop my rifle, take off my uniform and blend into the local market.
