GEJ Replies Gen Buhari Over His Statement On The Current State Of The Nation - S by Kennyroy24(f): 4:20pm On Jul 22, 2014
President Jonathan has reacted to a statement released yesterday July 21st by former Head of State & Chieftain of the APC, General Buhari in which Buhari cautioned him over the use of federal agents to fight the opposition party, noting that no democracy can succeed without an opposition.

In a statement which was signed by Presidential spokesman Reuben Abati, president Jonathan asked Buhari not to blame him for the woes his party, the APC, is going through. Find President Jonathan's statement below and what General Buhari said in his statement to President Jonathan after the cut...

President Jonathan's statement below...

We have noted with much surprise and regret, the statement issued by General Muhammadu Buhari today in which he made some wild and totally unsustainable allegations against President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
Although he tries very hard to deny it in the statement titled “Pull Nigeria Back From the Brink”, there can be no doubt that General Buhari has sadly moved away from the patriotic and statesmanlike position he recently adopted on national security, which President Jonathan publicly commended, and has now reverted to unbridled political partisanship.
There can be no other explanation or justification for the completely unwarranted and very uncharitable assault on the conduct and integrity of President Jonathan which the statement he issued today represents.
General Buhari’s main grouse which clearly motivated his ill-considered statement appears to be what he called “the gale of impeachments or the utilisation of desperate tactics to suffocate the opposition and turn Nigeria into a one-party state”. It is most unfortunate that instead of working to put their house in order and resolve the leadership crises and internal contradictions that have plunged their party into a downward spiral, General Buhari and his opposition allies have resorted to blaming a blameless President for their woes. The processes for impeaching an elected Governor are clearly stipulated in the National Constitution which Nigeria has operated since 1999. The President of Nigeria is not assigned any role in that process and President Jonathan has certainly not played any role in the recent impeachment of Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa or in the impeachment drama currently being played out in Nasarawa State. For the record, President remains fully committed to upholding the letters, principles and spirit of the Nigerian Constitution as he has sworn, and defending the rule of law and integrity of the democratic process with all his might.
General Buhari talks about anarchy. He needs to be reminded that President Jonathan from his humble beginnings as a Deputy Governor in Bayelsa state to date, has never in his acts, or utterances, recommended or promoted violence as a tool of political negotiation.
Contrary to whatever General Buhari and his new friends may imagine, President Jonathan fully respects the rights, powers, authority and independence of elected representatives of the people, including the members of the state assemblies who have concluded or initiated impeachment proceedings against their state governors on grounds which they consider justifiable. The constitution does not give the President any power to intervene in such proceedings and President Jonathan has never arrogated such powers to himself or sought to exert any nefarious and unconstitutional influence on state assemblies in Adamawa, Nasarawa or anywhere else in other to secure undue political advantage for his party as General Buhari unjustifiably alleges.

President Jonathan remains true to his declaration that no political ambition of his is worth the life of a single Nigerian. The President has definitely not declared war on his own country or deployed federal institutions in the service of partisan interests as General Buhari falsely claims. Neither has he been using the common wealth to subvert the system and punish the opposition, as the former Head of State inexcusably asserts.
Also, President Jonathan has never at any time ordered that any Nigerian should be kidnapped or that anyone should be crated and forcefully transported in violation of decent norms of governance.
We therefore urge General Buhari to tarry a while, ponder over his own antecedents and do a reality check as to whether he has the moral right to be so carelessly sanctimonious.
It may well be time to pull the brakes, as General Buhari says in his statement, but it is he and others who have resorted to idle scapegoating and blaming President Jonathan for their self-inflected political troubles who need to stop their inexcusable partisanship and show greater regard for the truth, democracy, constitutionalism, the rule of law, peace, security and the well-being of the nation.
Reuben Abati
Special Adviser to the President

Gen Muhammad Buhari's statement in part;
Whether or not President Goodluck Jonathan is behind the gale of impeachment or the utilization of desperate tactics to suffocate the opposition and turn Nigeria into a one-party state, what cannot be denied is that they are happening under his watch, and he cannot pretend not to know, since that will be akin to hiding behind one finger.
“In my capacity as an elder statesman, rather than a politician, I have spoken to President Jonathan in private over these issues, but indications are that the strategy has not yielded positive fruits. I cannot, just because I am an opposition politician, fail to do what is expected of me as an elder statesman to help rescue our nation in times of great trouble and palpable uncertainty.
“History will not be kind to me if I sit back while things turn bad, just so that no one will accuse me of partisanship. Yes, I am a politician. Yes, I am in the opposition. Yes, there is the tendency for my statement to be misconstrued as that of a politician rather than a statesman. But I owe it as a matter of duty and honour, and in the interest of our nation, to speak out on the dangerous trajectory that our nation is heading.
“I can say, in all sincerity, that I have seen it all, as an ordinary citizen, a military officer, a head of state, a man who has occupied many other sensitive posts and a politician. I have been a close participant and witness to Nigeria’s political history since independence in 1960.
“Our country has gone through several rough patches, but never before have I seen a Nigerian President declare war on his own country as we are seeing now. Never before have I seen a Nigerian President deploy federal institutions in the service of partisanship as we are witnessing now. Never before have I seen a Nigerian President utilize the commonwealth to subvert the system and punish the opposition, all in the name of politics. Our nation has suffered serious consequences in the past for egregious acts that are not even close to what we are seeing now. It is time to pull the brakes,”
“The dangerous clouds are beginning to gather and the vultures are circling, and these have manifested in Nasarawa where the ordinary people have defied guns and tanks to protest the plan to impeach Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura in a repeat of the bitter medicine forced down the throat of Governor Murtala Nyako.
“The people’s protest in Nassarawa is a sign of what will come if the federal authorities continue to target opposition state governors for impeachment. In the long run, the impeachment weapon will be blunted. Positions will become more hardened on both sides and Nigeria and Nigerians will become the victims of arrested governance and possible anarchy.”
“I, along with many other patriotic Nigerians, fought for the unity and survival of this country. Hundreds of patriotic souls perished in the battle to keep Nigeria one. The blood of many of our compatriots helped to water the birth of the democracy we are all enjoying today.
“Let no one, whether the leader or the led, the high or the low, a member of the ruling or the opposition do anything to torpedo the system. Let no one, whether on the altar of personal ambition or pretension to higher patriotic tendencies, do anything that can detonate the keg of gunpowder on which the nation is sitting. It is time for all concerned to spare a thought for the ordinary citizens who have yet to see their hopes, dreams and aspirations come to reality, within the general context of nationhood,’’ the statement read

Reuben Abati and the moronic defence of Jonathan Goodluck

It is a shame that Reuben Abati has chosen to be on the side of a sinking navy instead of calling a May Day warning. He has chosen not to be on the side of historical positivism when the drums of history start beating . What shall we say of shameful and pitiable attempt to lecture General Buhari. Abati's rethoric and wild swings are comical and silly. How hard can one fall off the wagon. We know no longer recognize him for what he has stood for or what he has written. Then, many of us read his page religiously in the Guardian and archived it for history to judge . Today we must burn our memories of him with our newspaper cuttings of his wonderful articles full of balanced arguments and political sensibilities in regret for a journalist who has sold his conscience for a bowl of porridge .

Yes you can balance your arguments and exonerate your President with intellectually sounding arguments of him sticking to his constitutional role as President. But Nigerians are no fools. No amount of lexical sophistry can free this President from the allegation before him. Let us however note this truth and ask ourselves honestly, is Goodluck Ebele Jonathan oblivious of the present developments in the states , did he have a hand in the impeachment of Nyako ? Is he oblivious of the Nasarawa impeachment saga moving with such speed and ill-purpose ? If he is, then we must also accept he is oblivious of the Chibok Kidnapping too . Sleeping Jonah does not know anything for he is inside a dead whales belly.

So much balderdash Reuben , from whence doth thou cometh ? Feed us no more with high faluting grammer. Same way you all decided in your kitchen cabinet to apply for $1bn dollar loan to fight insurgency that you refuse to audit . Why have you not advised your commander in chief to visit the zone. After all he controls all the instruments of violence in the country and the joint chiefs of staff will visit maiduguri with him. Even the old frail general Danjuma has volunteered to follow him as a shield and buckler, yet no response .

I swear Reuben if you and your boss go to Chibok I will vote and support the loan request because I, like many Nigerians will not have the liver to oppose because you have done an audit and know what is required. Please don't try to deceive Nigerians any further. Obasanjo has spoken and advised, Theo Danjuma has spoken, Atiku has pleaded with your boss, Young Vibrant APC leader in Kwara Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki has warned you, Alh Maitama Sule recently warned you, Gowon has too, Chaiman of the APC Excellency John Oyegun has spoken, warned and opined, Asiwaju the Jargaban Borgu kingdom has warned. The list of well meaning concerned Nigerians warning you to cease and desist from using desperate unconstitutional despotic fascist draconian measures to propergate your self and party into power is growing by the miniute. Sleeping Jonah wake up, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Now that you have heeded the advice of the Pakistani teenager for the parents of the kidnap victims to visit you in your borrowed casle, please not the timing is wrong for you have no results to show. You could have visited them in their domain even then without results and retain your self esteem and respect .

With my critique I must proffer solutions. Jonathan, please sack Reuben Abati he is your enemy . Leave the politics and democracy to the umpire so he can do a good job . INEC must be free of inteferance . If the wrong man ascends the position let the ballot paper be solely responsible . Democracy must reflect the wish of the electorate. Reuben knows that and stood for that in the past. PRigging elections should be a thing of the past in Nigeria , Nigerians are crying to develop and improve economically , socially and morally. Let your name be written in our history book as a matyr of our freedoms and democracy . Don't you remember the humiliation you suffered as VP and acting President ? Why deploy so many troops in Ekiti the cradle of knowledge so you can secure a gangster motor car dealer from Ibadan, because he has relatives in Ekiti to return as governor after they impeached him .

Don't forget the people deserve the leader they elect but not one they did not. Fayose is an imposition and you will see how he will disgrace you and Ekiti state sooner than later. Leaders evolve from their society and if Reuben does not tell you I will. They are a natural phenomena in growth and processes in politics. Leaders spring from concepts and methods of a political society so that the people who elect them want them and that way peace development and harmony prevails. Look at Osun state and the appropriation chairman giving out kerosene to the people to buy their votes . He is actually givin conditions like their PVC and vin being exchanged for kerosene and rice. Poor masses . Where was Omisore last year and the year before , he has returned at election time to deceive the people. Four year itch .

For this to be happening in your era as President is a disgrace to you . But that is what you get from a desperate politician seeking power at all cost. Who does Omisore love , who is he trying to help or which people is he trying to save . The grassroot people are hungry starving and desperate to survive he knows this so he exploits them , rice in Ekiti kerosene in Osun .

Let the people decide freely who they want. You can never fix all of Nigeria's problems no leader has accomplished that feat in history. Great leaders like Magaret Thatcher were kicked out office by her own party when she got into this mode you are in or does Reuben not know that. Oga Jonna don't let us disgrace you out of office make a U turn on these animals in mad men's skin you have in the villa....let the people be on your side, seek advise from honest people ,not those who are yes men . The country is against you now because you are not doing your job , because you are stifling the opposition who's job it is to keep you in check and create a balanced and accountable government that will keep the people stable and peaceful .

The APC is the alternative to your government , they have evolved through constitutional means. Nigeria has no light , no water, no good schools the way you measure your educational system is by the type of graduates you have . The present PDP government has further destroyed Nigeria we are now at war internally with ourselves from household , to families , to extended families to ethnic tribes and country at large . When Asiwaju told you the confab was a hoax and a charade and will not produce anything concrete did you listen . Asiwaju knows Nigeria has the blue print of solutions to our problems because he has experience and he is tried and tested. You should always consult great leaders and proven achievers , it's nothing to be proud of being C-in C yet it's and elevated position of humility backed by honour. Gen Mohamadu Buhari very respected elder statesman who stabilised Nigeria beyond belief in the short time he was head of state was truly insulted . Reuben has the effrontery to say he kidnapped Umaru Dikko stupid Reuben he forgot he jubilated at the news and cried the moment he heard the attempt was foiled at stanstead airport or heathrow now today he us singing another tune I'm sure you Mr President rejoiced like a majority of Nigerians both at home and the diaspora at the abduction because he offended Nigerians and was part of those that led to the collapse of Alhaji Shehu Shagaris government purely because of his corrupt practices.
Reuben is a disgrace and he will surely pull you down just like Dikko pulled Shagari down . Reuben is compromised and a disgrace to his profession.

The opposition has risen to take Nigerian from the claws of a dangerous inept government .

Please take caution in understanding the process leading to your becoming the opposition in the New Democratic process that will evolve in 2015 . It is going to be a new class act an accountable government that is close to the people for the people and by the people. The APC is an amalgamation of very important experienced Nigerians who have decided to oust the PDP so the robbery of the will of the people can stop . The people deserve better because Nigeria is richly blessed and endowed and a few people cannot hijack the economic power and resources and manipulate the majority . They will speak through the ballot box on the 9th of August. Abati must tell Jonathan that the sun sets soon on the dictator and bad ruler.

In 1963, Awo and Zik warned Tafawa Balewa about the drifting country. They were ignored. Few years later, there was a coup and then a civil war. In 1983, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo warned the NPN government led by President Shehu Shagari that the country was drifting. Shagari, in manners similar to today's GEF, through the then Uba Ahmed, said Awolowo was a 'confused' politician. The Owelle of Onitsha, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe also warned Shagari, the NPN, through Dr Chuba Okadigbo said Zik's warning was like the 'ranting of an ant' Not too long, the democratic experience was scuttled on December 31, 1983. In 1993, Soyinka warned Ibrahim Babangida and his later-day rookie, Ernest Shonekan that Nigeria was hanging in the balance, he didn't listen. The country witnessed upheavals that lasted until 1999. We are passing through the same ugly path again. GEF should heed the voice of reason.
