US State Department amends terrorist designation for Al Qaeda in Iraq

The US Department of State announced Wednesday that it had amended the foreign terrorist designation of al-Qaeda in Iraq by defining the alias Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant as its primary name.

"The Department of State announced the amendment of the designation of al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) under Section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act and as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist entity under section 1(b) of Executive Order (E.O.) 13224 to add the alias Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) as its primary name," a press release issued by the Department of State reads.
The measure also provides for the elimination of all aliases related to al-Nusrah Front (ANF), al-Qaeda's official branch operating in Syria.
According to the statement al-Nusrah Front is from now on designated as 'a standalone' foreign terrorist organization. al-Qaeda's leader Ayman al-Zawahiri issued an online statement in February denying any ties with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham.
The terrorist group also declined all responsibility for ISIS' actions. The designation of terrorist organizations is authorized in the US under Executive Order 13224 which was passed by US President George W. Bush shortly after the 9/11 attacks.

"The consequences of the FTO and E.O. 13224 designations include a prohibition against knowingly providing, or attempting or conspiring to provide, material support or resources to, or engaging in transactions with these organizations, and the freezing of all property and interests in property of the organizations that is in the United States, or come within the United States or the control of US persons."
Both ISIL and ANF have already been designated as foreign terrorist organizations under the Order.
