A young couple have vowed never to eat at KFC again after they found a living moth swimming inside their drink.

Nicky Hammond and boyfriend Jordan Laidler made a creepy discovery while dining at a KFC restaurant at Durham Retail Park at 2pm.

The disgusting find was made even more worse because Nicky has a phobia of moths.

Jordan, of Durham, said: "After we collected our food we noticed something in the drink. I opened up the cup and saw this moth still alive inside.

"We were both absolutely disgusted. We've heard horrific stories about things being found in fast food before, but it had never happened to us.

"They have got our order wrong in the past, but this is going a bit too far.

"I am not too bothered about moths, but my girlfriend is scared of them. We haven't eaten anything at all since it happened."

To add insult to injury, the queasy couple said they were angered further when restaurant staff refused to apologise.

"We couldn't believe it," Jordan said. "We were only offered the cheapest piece of food from our receipt.

"I mentioned it to staff quite discreetly as we didn't want to cause a fuss, but we weren't even offered an apology."

A KFC spokesperson said: "We are very sorry for the couple's experience because we take both customer service and food quality extremely seriously.

"The cups are sealed air tight until they are removed and stacked in a compact holder next to the drinks dispenser which makes any sort of contamination highly unlikely.

Nonetheless, as soon we were made aware of the situation we apologised on the spot and offered a refund to Nicky Hammond, which was not accepted.

"The couple phoned the store later that evening and a KFC employee apologised once again and offered them a full meal replacement plus 20% off their next meal.

"We would like to reassure customers that our Durham Retail Park restaurant achieved a food hygiene rating of five out of five stars meaning that the business was found to have very good hygiene standards."
