The first thing that gets in the head of most new companies that just launched their site is ‘Let us find the best SEO agent that can take our site to the front page’. I trust we Nigerians, we always want the best but pay for way less. Well I tell you, the good news is that it is possible, the not so bad news is “How much are you willing to pay?” You can Google all you want on the range of pricing SEO companies offer but the truth will always turn out to be that the price ranges are always too wide to be definite.

For example you’d see result like “SEO agents could charge on a per hour basis” or “pricing could range from N40,000 – N50,000 monthly”.

SEO is basically linking building, optimising content, keywords planning and geotagging. So the question is, what exactly do they do within the hours? Do you watch them while they are working? “I mean they’re not mechanics or house cleaners that work by the hour”, what changes do they make on your website that should take days? ‘well, except they’re to create content for your pages”. Building links only takes a few minutes to email a couple of bloggers or exchange quality links, while optimising content should be done as you make blog posts, in this case which should be probably twice a week or weekly for a regular business.

And for those that charge on monthly basis on a scale of N50,000 the question is, if you take N50,000 from a site owner who only has 10 pages in it, will you take the same from a site with over 200 pages? Because the last time I checked I thought the aim was to get all your pages indexed in Google as quickly as possible. So how do you optimise a website without having to tweak the pages individually?

Another thing that is to put into consideration in SEO are the use of keywords. Do you charge a site owner that wants his site optimised for over 50 keywords the same thing as a site owner who wants his site optimised for just 10 keywords? Let’s take for example, you get a customer who runs a beauty and spa business and I think customers looking for that business will type in words like, beauty and spa, spa treatment, body waxing, body cleansing, facial polish. Anything more than this will just be for no reason.

Then you get another customer who has a financial institution and wants his site optimised for over 100 keywords with various related links such as finance, account, bank, loan, credit, funds, mortgage and the list goes on and on. Now the question is how do you charge?

Let me stop with the instances and examples and delve into how much SEO services should cost exactly. The truth is that there’s no definite pricing, and there isn’t supposed to be a definite pricing. In order to accurately charge a customer, the SEO agent should have had a look at the website, ran out an analysis on it, evaluate it and decide how much he is willing to take and also consider the time frame it should take to get the site ranking, because the truth of SEO is that, the more keywords competition the harder it is to get ranked.

My advice is that customers should run away from SEO agents that have fixed prices, these people don’t know what they are doing.
