There was commotion on Monday, August 11 at the General Hospital
in Oke-Odo, Agege, Lagos State, when a woman suspected to be
infected with the deadly Ebola virus showed up there.
According to sources in the hospital who spoke to Daily Sun, the
frail looking lady who came with blood oozing from her mouth and
nostrils was chased out of the hospital by the nurses on duty.
She was reportedly told to go to the Yaba isolation centre created
by the Lagos State Government for Ebola virus victims.
After she had left and the news got to people in the area, they
panicked and ran in different directions.
The traders within the vicinity were said to have scampered in
different directions.
It took several hours before normalcy was restored to the area.
Three people have already died of the Ebola virus in Nigeria. First
person was the Liberian man, Patrick Sawyer who brought the
disease into the country, followed by a nurse who took care of him
and a Protocol Officer of ECOWAS who assisted him to the hospital.
The death toll has continued to rise and over a thousand people
have died in Guinea, Sierre Leone, Liberia and Nigeria.

I never understand why Nigerians always stampede in DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS when they are frightened of something or something said. Can't they at least agree to all run in the SAME direction, so as to minimize the number of collisions between runners, and, while we are on the subject, when will they learn to just leg-it, bolt, sprint, or BOOK UP, as opposed to SCAMPERING from perceived threats ?

Why must they always SCAMPER ? I am tired of that chit, and I hereby demand that all cowardly acts of SCAMPERING in Nigeria stop at once.

Mice SCAMPER, and humans SCARPER. Note the difference in spelling.

That was very wrong and it shows that Lagos is still not ready to tackle this issue of ebola. Why should a nurse chase a suspected ebola case away? Is that the instruction they got from the Lagos state govt? They should have held the patient and called the ebola management team to pick the patient and take her to an isolation centre. I expect that by now every hospital in Lagos should have a place where they can keep a possible ebola case for some hours before moving them to isolation centres.

Sending the patient away is counterproductive because she'll continue to spread the disease. To make matters worse, this atrocious act happened in a state govt owned general hospital. I expect that by now there should be a STANDING INSTRUCTION on how to manage a suspected case of ebola in any healthcare centre in any part of the country. This is very sad. Lagos is clearly not ready for ebola outbreak.

I see you're out here again asking your meaningless questions. Has your favourite Federal Government provided enough kits to combat this disease to Lagos Hospitals? Can you prove that all Federal Hospitals in Lagos are well-equipped to cater for Ebola victims? Talk of hypocrisy...

I am not in the mood for any back and forth debate with an ignoramus. I am saddened by this report already. A nurse shouldn't be sending a suspected ebola case away. It is unethical, criminal, unprofessional, wicked, atrocious and counterproductive. I'm out of this thread.

Sincere9gerian is right. It was totally wrong on the part of the medical personnels to act in that manner. If it was an ebola case truly, imagine how many people the fellow would have made contact with since then. Unprofessional, unethical, and pathetic.

If this story is anything to go by, Then we are not yet ready to tackle the deadly Ebora disease.

There should be a department responsible for attending to all Ebola suspected patients in all Government hospitals especially in Lagos.
If the hospital suspect any patient is infected with the disease, even if the hospital don't have a quarantine room or van to take him to the nearest Ebola quarantine centre, a person fully covered with PPE should sit the patient down under a tree and call on the 'Ebola agents' to come and pick him/her, rather than chasing the patient away.

If you chase the patient away, do you know howmany contacts she's going to have before she eventually goes back home or find another hospital? And the more the contact, the more the spread and threat.

In my opinion I think all the nurses involved in chasing the woman away should be sacked because they are incompetent. This will also serve as a detterent to others.

It takes very specialized, hermetically sealed isolation wards, dedicated equipment and disposable protective clothing to SAFELY treat highly infectious diseases such as Ebola, so the nurses, by IMMEDIATELY turning away a person with Ebola symptoms, did the right thing to save themselves, and all other patients housed in their hospital, from a possible death sentence far messier than a gunshot or machete attack.

Infact, the use of general hospitals buildings as treatment base was among the factors that spread Ebola exponentially in Liberia and Sierra-Leone. Somehow, I support the nurses but I think they could have gone a step further by calling in the local CDC to evacuate the patient.

For once I am tempted to agree with you.
If the story is true, imagine:
1) how many people would/could have been injured in the stampede
2) how many people the patience would/could have infected before she got to the isolation center -if she makes it there.
she is an extremely dangerous timebomb that should have been isolated in the clinic and the nurse should have called the lagos state isolation center to come take her

Hard to believe that the message is still not getting through with all the Ebola sensitization going on all over the state and the fact that some healthcare professionals are still ignorant per what steps to take when dealing with suspected Ebola patients spells continued danger and threat to the citizenry..

look at health professionals... why not tell her to seat.. use personal protective instrument to stabilize her, or if u don't want to do that, just call the ppl at d isolation centre to come and pick her... telling her to go means more contact on her way there... and what if she refuses to go at all in denial state...... pls, Nigerian health professionals , don't follow dz trend

I can't believe this is coming from you. So a patient comes to the hospital with a complain and symptoms suggestive of Ebola. The nurse was right in identifying the symptoms. Instead of her to ask the patient to sit in an isolated place while she calls the Lagos state emergency number for specialise officials to come. She decided to send the patient away. There by endangering more people. Risk of spreading infection starting from the patient family member, the people she is going to come in contact inside bus on her way back and ordinary citizens who may not be able to identify the symptoms of Ebola. Exactly how the disease was able to spread in guinea. And here you are saying the nurse did "THE RIGHT THING". I wonder whether a doctor would have acted the same way.

Nobleval: So what is your point? Are you trying t o defend the Medics?

Oh yes absolutely, indeed I am defending the quick-thinking nurses in that hospital for rejecting a patient showing signs of what COULD be an advanced and EXTREMELY infectious case of Ebola viral infection. Allowing that patient unrestricted access to any hospital facility that is NOT specially equipped to contain the Ebola virus COULD spread the illness to EVERY PERSON present at the time of admission, along with ALL who unwittingly touch door handles and other surfaces that may have been touched by the Ebola victim within the hospital building.

The Lagos hospital that WISELY rejected a suspected Ebola case was evidently no better equipped to handle such a virulent contagion than would be a plumbing contractor to perform brain surgery. The woman with the alarming symptoms frightened the bejeebers out of the hospital staff that spotted her coming in, and they acted fast, in the fundamentally human spirit of self-preservation, that must ALWAYS take precedence over the opinions of distant observers brimming with advisory nuggets of 20-20 hindsight.
