That is because the Spanish Government pushed to get the drug for the Priest.

When President Obama gave his reasons why the drug could not be sent to Nigeria, what steps did our Minister of health take to fight for the drug. Did he contact WHO and other bodies to fight for the drugs?

What about asking for WHO to give us the right to carry out clinical trials with other experimental drugs seeking FDA approval.

Our government went home saying President Obama said no. Did they even contact the managers of Mapp BioPharma?

Experimental Ebola Drug ZMapp Made Available for Priest in Spain

Expermental Ebola drug ZMapp has been made available to Spanish medical authorities, who retrieved the medicine from Geneva for use in the treatment of a priest stricken with Ebola who was airlifted to Spain for medical care.

News stories are reporting that permission to make the dose available was given by the manufacturer MAPP pharmaceuticals. The medical aid organization MSF (Doctors Without Borders) helped in the transaction.

Press reports last week claimed that Nigerian officials had asked about the availability of the drug and were told that no doses were available for use in West African patients.

I disagree with those who have described Patrick Sawyer as a madman. He was not mad at all but just evil. He was a man that was on a mission. That mission was to spread the ebola virus to Nigeria and to infect and kill as many people as possible with it.(continue)

He was an evil man with an evil intention and purpose. Worst still he was not working alone. Some people, and I mean rich, powerful and well-connected people, were working with him.As a matter of fact they sent him on the mission. They cultivated him, took care of him, paid him, brainwashed him, gave him all that he wanted in life and finally asked him to go on a suicide mission to destroy the lives of others and spread the deadly disease. This was a clear case of bio-terrorism and Sawyer was simply a pawn in a bigger game and a wider picture. The motive of those who sent him was to spread fear and panic, to kill as many people as possible, to create a need for a solution to the problem, to prepare the ground for a new wonder drug that could cure ebola, to create a massive market for that drug and to ensure that there would be massive profits from it’s sale.As usual it is the unbelieving, unprepared, undiscerning and naive Africans that have been used as the prime guinea pigs. When will they stop destroying us and treating us with such contempt? When will they begin to see and treat us as human beings?

The drug is not produced in large scale. The drug is not also produced free of charge. It is an expensive research project.

Our Minister of Health and the President should be in discussion with them. Know the challenges they face to get the drug here and support them especially financially.

Our government can not sit down and make calls and expect the drugs.

Other companies like Tekmira and FujiFilm should be contracted and discussed with.

Hahahahaha definitely!! If Ebola finds its way into Europe, a cure will emerge from nowhere. But damn!! It will be proper scary and spread like wildfire.

Zaire had the first cases of Ebola in the 70s, when they were being ruled by a complete airhead Mobutu Seseseko who knew only how to siphon money.

Somehow, Ebola was brought under control and since then no African government has taken the initiative to invest resources into further research on this vicious virus (despite smaller outbreaks over the years) other countries who never experienced Ebola, developed experimental drugs and kept them in anticipation of something like this.

I think Africa deserves no sympathy from anyone.

A lot is still not known about Ebola, most of the information being circulated are old and outdated or just products of brief research, the west is just starting to pay more attention to this virus.

I'm still of the opinion that this particular strain could be airborne, just take a look at the infection rate, it's insane!!

Lmao!! Do you remember when swine flu(H1N1) was the new kid on the block, with no cure, and Manchester City footballer, Micah Richards contracted it in Cyprus? Bruv, they found a cure for him when he got to the UK. That's how it goes. grin

Darn!! Mobutu Sese Seko, another legendary African despot - this plonker right here was richer than his own country - freaking lunatic! I despise this guy even in death for killing Lumumba. And the mad thing about it is that: a lot of Congolese folks actually believe he was a great president! My Congolese friend used to defend this guy. And that's how some Ugandan guy I know used to defend Idi Amin. But one thing though, GEJ makes Mobutu look like Albert Einstein - that's indisputable!

Basically, the problem with Africans is that: most of them are insensitive, careless, lack creativity, intellectually unconscious, sheepish, and they can't take the initiative on anything - except spouting every junk they read without any basic understanding of anything. Serious people would have opened tons of research centres all over the continent by now, and taken the initiative without waiting for anyone. However, with Africans, they always have to wait for other people to do for it them - and reap where they didn't not sow. Almost everything I've read about Ebola in Africa, was written by white researchers and scientists. Heck, the handful of Ebola research centres out there are run by WHO and countries in the west. What do you expect from people who can't even deal with polio and other diseases that are non-existent in other climes?

Anyway, someone should beg the western overlords to help us, before everyone dies off on the continent. Who knows what's coming after Ebola?

[b] Eight Ebola patients in Nigeria will be treated with an experimental drug called Nano Silver, the Nigerian minister of health said, according to news reports.

The drug was reportedly developed by a Nigerian doctor living overseas, and is being shipped to Nigeria's biggest city, Lagos. But the health minister did not disclose the name of the doctor who developed the treatment, and little else is known about it, the Wall Street Journal reported.

One possibility is that the drug is made from nanoparticles of silver, but it may also be made from other components, experts say. In any case, it's highly unlikely the medicine has ever been tested against Ebola in nonhuman animals, experts say.

"I am suspicious of the claim … of this being a viable treatment for Ebola virus, and I am worried that this will cause more harm than good," said Dr. Amesh Adalja, an infectious-disease specialist and a senior associate at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's Center for Health Security. [5 Things You Should Know About Ebola]

Experimental drugs

The current Ebola outbreak — the largest in history — has killed more than 1,000 people in West Africa. Because there is no approved vaccine or treatment for Ebola, and the virus has a high fatality rate, the World Health Organization decided this week that it was ethical to use unproven drugs in the current outbreak.

Two American health care workers and a Spanish priest received doses of an experimental, antibody-based drug called ZMapp. (The Americans are reported to be improving; the priest has died.) A Canadian company is donating 1,000 doses of its experimental drug to Liberia, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration lifted a hold on using another drug, developed by Tekmira Pharmaceuticals. All of those drugs have been tested in nonhuman primates, and the Tekmira drug is going through initial safety trials in humans.

But the drug that Nigerian health officials plan to use is much less well known — and likely less tested — than any of these experimental compounds, experts say.

Nano silver

No one has reported on what Nano Silver is made of, or how it works.

One possibility is that the drug uses tiny — or "nano" — particles of silver. There is some evidence that silver has antimicrobial properties, said Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine and infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

But as far as taking it orally as medicine, "silver has been tried in various other circumstances against several different infections with very limited effect," Schaffner told Live Science.

Adalja noted that silver coatings on bed railings, catheters and endotracheal tubes can inhibit bacteria from colonizing those surfaces. Silver is also added to certain topical antibacterial creams, such burn creams, to prevent infection, he said.

But there's no peer-reviewed evidence that silver could help a person infected with the Ebola virus, Adalja said. And if the drug were actually made of tiny silver nanoparticles, then the particles could potentially penetrate cells and "wreak some havoc there," Adalja added.

In the U.S. and elsewhere, the diet supplement colloidal silver is popular, although drinking too much of the liquid silver suspension can have an ugly side effect: Colloidal silver can turn people blue.

But it's possible that the phrase "nano silver" is just a catchy name for a totally different compound, Adalja said.

No animal testing

It's unlikely that Nano Silver has been tested in animals infected with Ebola, Adalja said. In the United States, Ebola is incredibly hard to gain access to: Anyone who handles live Ebola virus must work in one of a handful of biosafety level 4 (BSL-4) laboratories, and must be cleared by both the FBI and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to work with such a dangerous agent, Adalja said.

Another reason to doubt the treatment's validity is that any success in Ebola research tends to be big news, he said. In other words, if Nano Silver were showing promise, it would likely not have just been noticed now.

"Most of the things that are going on with Ebola are very well publicized," Adalja told Live Science.

Giving untested treatments to Ebola patients is a risky proposition, Schaffner said.

People may think to themselves, "'These are desperate circumstances. What's to lose?'" Schaffner said. "There's a terrific amount to lose."

If the drugs harm people, or are just useless, "the already shaky confidence in the health care system could be threatened," Schaffner said.

Even focusing on more tested drugs could undermine the public health effort. Quantities of all the experimental drugs are scarce, and are no substitute for "tried and true" methods for stopping Ebola, Adalja said.

"That involves basic public health and hygiene, finding cases, reporting them and tracking them," Adalja said.

So so on point bro. True talk. We really need to start doing for self and not wait for these people to do it for us. It is just all politics, nobody gives a hoot about our welfare as Africans, and really, nobody should but us. Remember the Indo China wars and the Vietnam War? It is always about the west's interests, nothing else matters.

Everything is politics, brother.

Even if they decide to release a cure for it, how many Africans will be able to afford it? Especially where you have governments that don't care about the people. Serra Leone is so poor - it doesn't even have enough wealth to defend its borders. Ditto Liberia and Guinea. And you have got Nigeria where the government is just utter inept and useless . The business just doesn't make sense.

I'm sure the world is tired of Africa just being an appendage and scrounging off everyone for aids and help, without necessarily contributing anything apart from looted funds and resources.

Anyway, where are the experimental drugs from Canada and Japan?
