The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the defection of one of its chieftains, Nuhu Ribadu, to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as ‘very terrible’.

Reports surfaced on Saturday, August 16 that Ribadu, a former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had decamped to the ruling party, PDP.
Reacting to the defection, the National Chairman of the APC, John Odigie-Oyegun who spoke with Premium Times in a telephone interview on Sunday, said Ribadu’s action was merely a confirmation of the level to which the Nigerian society had degenerated.
Oyegu expressed disappointment that a man of his calibre would fall into temptation because of governorship position.

He said: “For a man of his calibre to say the things he has said on record and still did this, is disappointing. If he had done this six months ago that would have been understandable. But just because of nomination, you fell for it, even if it is the main election. (Buba) Marwa is there; the Speaker is there. This is rock bottom. Haba wetin! The disconnection is too direct.

I hope you understand the point I am making. I am not sad because of the APC, but because it reflects on the condition of the Nigerian elite and the kind of things they fall for. For the APC, there is no problem. People go, people come, but for this nation, it is a very sad commentary. It makes you unhappy.”

However, Oyegun said the APC wishes him luck in his new party.
He explained that the time has come when the nation should have politicians of principle, adding that things like this cannot continue.

Reports surfaced recently that Ribadu was trying to decamp to PDP and had met with President Jonathanand got the president’s approval to go for the soon to be vacant governorship position in Adamawa state.
Ribadu was the presidential candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, in the 2011 elections.
ACN later merged with the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, the Congress for Progressives Change, CPC, and a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA to form the APC.

The political class lack principle. They are like the weather beasts that move when the current weather is not favourable. The desperation to clinch power is more important to them than building the fabrics of the party. This is the challenge we face as a nation.

His moving to post might be the only chance the adamawa have for good governance for now. Afterall respected Dora Akunyili also decamped to apga and fought a tough battle. It did not tarnish her image. I trust Nuhu Ribadu. He has proven that he can not be bought. We all know that APC is still not what we desire it to be.

The defection of Ribadu beggars belief and raises a curious question:

1. Why would Ribadu, who would probably have being the sole or primary candidate, thereby standing a better chanceon the APC platform, defect from the party to the PDP where there are possibly about 9 heavyweight politicians scrambling for the same post?

Perhaps, this only shows that the APC's victory in Osun was only a fluke since a chieftain of the party in Adamawa state does not trust the party enough to deliver on his ambition.

Don't be surprised when this same Oyegun will defect to PDP.

When 5 gov left PDP for APC it did not reflect on the condition of the nigerian elite?

This is Politics, no permanent friends, No permanent enemies!
