Sometime last year I journeyed from Lagos state to Kwara state. I set out very early to go take care of an important family business in one of the towns of Kwara state. I arrived Ilorin the capital of kwara at about 9am and to my utmost frustration there were no movements in Ilorin. It was governorship election day and there were policemen all over the place.

I didn't know what to do but I needed to attend to the family business before 1pm and movement was restricted till 4pm. I came along with only enough money for the trip. I begged different drivers to help me and I promised to pay them handsomely. They were all afraid of the police. I just needed a driver dt will agree to take me to the town and back to Lagos for any fee. Mind you I didn't carry my ATM card. I hate carrying it because I can be a very wasteful spender. Taking d exact amount of money I need helps me to control my spending.

I lost hope and called my wife to let her know that my trip will be unsuccesful. I told her there were policemen everywhere and no vehicular movements. She encouraged me not to lose hope and adviced me to approach the policemen for help. WHAAAT I outrightly rejected the advice. But she insisted and reminded me that I had nothing to lose. The trip was as good as over.

I reluctantly agreed. At that moment I had only about N6000 with me. I approached a group of policemen, introduced myself and explained my predicament. The leader of the group directed a younger officer to take me to their oga at d station.

We got to the station and the officer took me to their oga, an elderly Hausa man with a very warm disposition. I again introduced myself and narrated my woes. I told him that I needed to conclude my mission in Kwara state before 1pm. He graciously agreed to help me but asked me to fuel one of their police cars for the journey. The town I was headed to was quite far from the capital. I happily agreed and he gave me a police car with one policeman as driver and another policeman as escort.

That was how I left Ilorin for my destination. I used N5000 from my 6k to fuel the car. On our way there were lots of police barricade but we had no problems at all. We passed through safely and the policemen waited for me till I concluded my business. Their presence even made the business easier. People treated me with so much respect meanwhile I had only 1k on me. I used up my remaining 1k in no time.

In the end, the policemen took me back to Ilorin with no money in my pocket. On our way I knew I needed to appreciate those guys but I had no money at all. I didn't even have transport fare to go back to Lagos. My plan was to charter a car from Ilorin to my house in Lagos and then pay the driver when we get to Lagos. I didn't know anywhere in Ilorin so I knew I still had to depend on these guys. Chaii!!! I felt it was very shameful after all the effiizy.

I was communicating with my wife all these while through bbm. She again encouraged me to be open with them. This time it was easy to agree with her. I opened up to the policemen and to my surprise they understood with me. I explained my plans to them but one of them insisted that my plan was expensive, that I could get back to Lagos cheaper. He suggested that I use regular transport. This guy drove me to one of his friends and borrowed 2k from him to give me. Mind you, this guy didn't know me from anywhere. It was weekend and he just begged me to pay back the money into his account on Monday. I was surprised. I took his account number and he drove me to the park where I boarded a bus to Ibadan and from Ibadan to Lagos.

The next Monday I payed the money into his account. I also paid in extra money for him in deep appreciation.

This is a true story. I felt a strong need to share this on NL in appreciation of any good policeman out there.

They are just humans. Had one experience.
I mistakenly broke traffic rule in portharcourt some years ago.
It was this viscous type of task force. I had no money on me that day. They took me to the station and when it dawned on them that I had no money on me, they decided to hold my car. A kind hearted officer came in and I explained to him and he gave me some money to settle his colleagues without their knowledge. He said that he pitied me because he knew how his colleagues can escalate my case.
