A vaccine developed by the U.S.
National Institute for Allergy and
Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in
collaboration with drugmaker
GlaxoSmithKline and the United States
Army Medical Research Institute for
infectious diseases will be subject to
first human trials starting next week.
The trial will be sponsored by the
National Institutes of Health (NIH), after
the vaccine was fast-tracked for testing
to tackle the Ebola outbreak which has
killed more than 1,500 people out of
more than 3,000 infected in Liberia,
West Africa and Guinea.
To conduct the trial, 20 healthy adults
aged 18-50 will be enrolled to test the
vaccine’s safety and see whether it
prompts the body to generate an
immune response. The study will be
conducted at NIH headquarters in
Bethesda, Md.
NIH and British medical foundations will
separately test the vaccine in Britain,
Gambia and Mali. The Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention is
discussing a trial in Nigeria.
NIH expects it will likely have the
results of the study before the end of
the calendar year.
“We have accelerated the timeline for
testing experimental Ebola vaccines
that we have been developing for
several years,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci,
director of the NIAID at the NIH.
To make the vaccine, scientists used a
virus called an adenovirus that infects
chimpanzees but not humans. It was
chosen as a vehicle for the vaccine
because it shouldn’t make people sick.
Glaxo’s Dr. Rip Ballou explained that
human body shouldn’t attack the
vaccine, as it doesn’t have the
antibodies to fight it.
