Does It Really Matter??? by anumide(f): 3:00pm On Sep 05, 2014
A friend of mine recently got married to a guy she dated for 7years.
Five years into the relationship, she broke up with him because he refused to go above OND while my friend was in her 400level. She then started dating a guy who graduated with a strong 2.1
One year and six months later, 2.1 graduate was still jobless, she was fed up.
Luckily for her OND guy and his family hadn't given up on her (the girl is homely, smart, decent and honest. Plus investment must not waste tongue)
Her story came up in a conversation yesterday and I realized most of my friends had guys they really liked but said no to because of educational difference. (masters-OND, B.sc-NCE, that kind thing)
My question is, if it is okay for a man to date/marry a woman he is academically/financially higher than, what is wrong with a woman doing same Sebi all of us are screaming 'gender mainstreaming'?
I think d value placed on certificate is overated, what do u think?

Degrees are good.... Going to school is good. But sadly, degrees doesn't make a good man/woman. It doesn't mean the relationship/marriage will be smooth. it's not a guarantee for bliss.

There is a difference between being educated and going to school. When you go to school, you come back with degrees and certificates. When you're educated(which could be achieved by going to school), you expand your creative, thinking and imaginative ability to situations and circumstances.

I'd rather have an educated partner than have a partner with a bag full of degrees.

Steve jobs(apple),bill Gates(microsoft),Abraham Lincoln(president) oprah(former richest black woman),Coco Chanel(popular channel we all rock),Ellen DeGeneres(comedian),mark zuckerberg(our very own facebook),brad pitt(dropped out two weeks before graduation),Ralph lauren, lady gaga(bet u know her),al pacino, walt Disney, tom hanks,Tumblr kajillionaire, etc and even our very own seun osewa(nairaland) dint have a degree yet they are successful and even more successful than some who spent all their lives in school, education isn't a qualification to the amount of wealth u can acquire, its just an added advantage. what matters is HARDWORK,PASSION,FOCUS,DEDICATION TO UR GOALS AND DREAMS,understanding, driving force and honesty. #ToMe#ITS NOT BY GRADES bt BY GRACE(I made that quote back then in uni when my dad pressured me that I must graduate with a first class(coz sum1 gave testimony in church and bought a car for her dad) wen I wasn't even serious at all in school(got into uni 16,young,alone,flexing and naive) begged god to give me a miracle that would make me tell the world it's not by grades but by grace alas I got a very good job in my final year, they sponsored d remaining part of my 1st degree and 2nd(which I had so much passion for) and even masters(abroad) while most of my mates who had 1st class were begging me for employment).

op you sound very much like you are the girl in question. Anyways, formal education is good but does not guarantee success, responsibility or happiness. One may not be educated but will be literate.

What I find disturbing is that that guy, with the backing of his family, went ahead and married that person.

Classic case of potential or no potential. So the OND guy suddenly has more potential?

This kind of thing happened more in an under developed world. Do not get me wrong.

Love is a matter of the heart. it has nothing to do with your educational background.
Take Australia for example Australia is just an opposite of Nigeria.
A mechanic earn more than a graduate. a truck driver earn more than a professor and the list goes on and on. where a poor man shop is still the same place the rich man will shop.

You will be in a bus or somewhere, you will see a dirty looking brick layer with his work cloth hugging a beautiful girl, probably a banker or any other profession without minding how dirty he was. but in Nigeria never. A girl can't even be seen with a mechanic boyfrieend. Every one must not go to school and every one must not be a graduate.

After going to school and bagging all the degrees under the face of the sun, some people still remain ''uneducated''.

Certificate does not(and should not) define our lives. It what a man has upstairs that matters.

That is what I was thinking too
No girl will do that to my brother and come back

Life is full of ups and downs, so there is a possibility that this girl will still go off again if God forbid the man looses his job or falls ill or something.

Look how she left the 2.1 guy too high and dry too, becasue he didnt get a job within 1.5 years of graduating as if there were jobs out there but the 2.1 guy refused to take them undecided

I woudnt want her type in my family.

Exactly. And this is how foolishness is perpetuated. Do the guy and his family think so lowly of themselves that they'll beg a dog to go back to its vomit? It's disgusting. These are the kind of women that sleep with other men for meatpie and Malta Gold, not even Amstel Malta. Shior.

ok i will simply answer the question with what you think: the value placed on paper qualification is over rated.

If you find a doting man, who is selfless and successful profession wise, stick to him.

Because, at the end of all the song and dance, a woman marries a man she wants to look up to, a man she can respect, a man who will be higher than her in every way, a man she can rely on.

Marrying someone below her class is a step down for her. A man can do this without batting an eye because he is the head of the relationship. A woman cannot afford to do this.
