The Rivers State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party on Tuesday put an end to the controversy surrounding the zoning of the governorship position in the state when it declared that the position would not be zoned to any ethnic nationality, senatorial district or local government area.The State Chairman of the PDP, Mr. Felix Obuah, who made this declaration shortly after a closed door meeting with executive members of the party, said every Rivers son and daughter with the qualified age was free to contest.It will be recalled that the upland, riverine areas and two out of the three senatorial districts have been clamouring ahead of the 2015 elections that the governorship position of the state be zoned to them.The decision of the party may also have ended the uncertainty surrounding the Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike’s governorship ambition.Obuah, who read from a communiqué issued after the state PDP executive meeting, explained that the decision to allow all the senatorial districts and ethnic nationalities to contest the 2015 governorship election was to avoid the imposition of any candidate on the people.Pointing out that the party’s decision will also allow the best governorship candidate to emerge, Obuah added that the state PDP would be able to manage the number of aspirants the non-zoning of the governorship position would throw up.He said, “The state chapter of the party has not and shall not zone the governorship ticket of the party to any ethnic nationality, senatorial district or local government area. Consequently, all constitutionally qualified members of the party are free to vie for the party’s ticket to allow for the best candidate to emerge.“In the past, the level of imposition of candidates has almost torn the party apart. Most of our elected members were there, not because they were the choice of the people, but they were the choice of the leader, who made use of them.“We are saying we will allow everybody, no matter the sex, no matter the culture. This is because we want to present the best for Rivers State. No matter how many they (governorship aspirants) are, we are capable of screening them and the best candidate will be presented to stand for election.”Obuah, however, condemned the fraternization of one of the members of the party’s Board of Trustees with the State Governor, and leader of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, in order to undermine the PDP.

That was why even when Amaechi's election in PDP primaries 2007 had "K Leg" another Ikwerre man who happens to come from Amaechi's place, Celestine Omehia, was asked to fly the PDP flag even without being among those that contested the primaries then. By right, the runners up to Amaechi then should have fly the flag of the PDP. In 2015, Wike's failure will start from Ikwerre where he comes from

I still wonder how some politicians in this forum can't see further! The only reason Wike can fail is if GEJ fails but in as much as Jonathan remain,Wike will be there. I am not typing in support of Wike but the reality in Nigerian politics.
