About 135 Muslim girls and women allegedly abducted during the Yelwan Shendam religious crisis of 2005 are yet to be released by Christian clerics despite all efforts to secure their freedom, the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) has said.
The President of the council Dr. Ibrahim Datti Ahmad who spoke to newsmen at the weekend shortly after 50 Muslim organisations from across the country met in Kaduna alleged that the abductees were subjected to forced labour and sexual abuse by their abductors who were mainly Christian clerics. He said they were abducted during the crisis that lasted for days after their husbands and parents had been killed. He added, “After killing their parents in their presence, they took them to the bush, trying to convert them to Christianity but when they refused to be converted, they started maltreating them through sexual abuse and forced labour’’.

Ahmad alleged that the perpetrators were doing it with the support and assistance of the Plateau State government. He also said the state government had been suppressing moves by the council to expose the abductors.

“When the abductors realised that they could not convert the Muslim girls and women to their religion, they asked some of the relatives to pay ransom before their loved ones are released to them. We have done all we could to secure their release, but they never allowed us to succeed,’’ he said.

He called on the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency intervene to secure their freedom and that their abductors should be made to pay compensation to their families for forced labour and sexual abuse.

“A sizable number of them have put to bed as a result of the sexual abuse by their kidnapers and yet they refused to release them’’, he added.

The SCSN demanded that the Federal Government must take all necessary steps to make the recent crisis in Plateau State last January the last one.
