Two persons were killed at the weekend while the country home of former Minister of Science and Technology, Prof. Barth Nnaji, was destroyed in a fresh outbreak of communal violence between Umuode and Oruku communities in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The two communities have engaged each other in a prolonged land dispute, which had defied every effort towards its resolution, including a White Paper of the Enugu State Government.
One of the victims, Nicholas Ugwu, a mason and father of four, was killed in an attack on Umuode community on Good Friday night by gunmen believed to be operating from the neighbouring Oruku community.
The gunmen also sacked residents who had been taking refuge in the country home of Prof. Nnaji, who was recently appointed as a member of the Presidential Advisory Committee (PAC) of Acting President Goodluck Jonathan.
The hoodlums reportedly had a field day and burnt all the property in Nnaji’s home, including the personal effects of those taking refuge in the house since last year’s attack rendered them homeless.
Speaking at his Enugu residence on Saturday, Nnaji expressed outrage that the police who were mandated to protect the Umuode people against incessant aggression from their Oruku neighbours abandoned their responsibility, which gave room for the unchallenged assault.
“There is no place where government can keep security apparatus and lives and property will be in jeopardy,” he stated.
While calling on the government to take action, he said the police should be able to arrest and prosecute all those involved in the attack as well as those supposed to have provided security when the incident happened
