discovered in 1972, the human race has never seen nor witnessed a deadlier or more devastating disease that sweeps across the face of human race, leaving humans and animals dead in its wake in an unimaginable magnitude. The recent re-emergence of the Ebola virus which parade African continent especially West African countries showed high precedence rate in the countries like Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone which due to poor health care and disease containment protocols in the prevalent countries helped the spread. Unfortunately, late Liberian-American, Patrick Sawyer’s importation of the disease into Nigeria created a massive scare in the highly populated country. Since then, Nigeria struggled to contain the spread of the virus in the country; unfortunately seven lives were lost in the process, three being health-care workers. The Minister of health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, announced the successful containment of the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the country. According to Prof. Chukwu, who made this known in a statement through his Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Mr. Dan Nwomeh, said: “At present, there is no single current case of confirmed EVD in Nigeria. However, a suspected case of EVD from Ile- Ife, a university student who had contact with the late Port Harcourt doctor at a naming ceremony in Port Harcourt has been quarantined and is being investigated.” Currently, the University Student from Ile- Ife after being investigated has also been declared negative after having undergone the necessary tests. Reactions from people across Nigeria showed almost the same level of excitement and joy for the country being finally declared free from the disease that is highly capable of wiping out whole families. “The management of this deadly virus is the best we’ve got in Nigeria for decades. The Health Minister surely deserves commendation from Nigerian for a job well done. Nigeria health sector has done what the whole world including USA is unable to do. Thank you for saving the life of Nigerians and also making us a force to reckon with globally,” said Omotaye Kolade. Vincent Gagazie, heaped encomiums on the Nigerian health authorities and health workers who lost their lives in the battle to rid the country of the Ebola Virus “Well done. A rare Nigerian success story,” he said. “However, a lot of credit must go to the late Dr. Stella Adadayeh for the professional manner with which she handled the index case (Mr. Patrick Sawyer) even at the risk of losing her own life (which unfortunately happened) and thus prevented the EVD spiraling out of control in our country. “The Federal Government must ensure that her name is immortalized. Credit must also go to the Lagos State Govt. for the prompt way in which they handled the situation (information control and setting up isolation ward, etc.) and finally credit to the Federal Government and ministry of health for the crucial role they played in ensuring that the EVD did not spread. However, we must not rest on our oars. As long as the EVD remains unchecked in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone; we must be extremely vigilant and ensure that constant surveillance is maintained at our entry points (airports, seaports and land border crossings) to ensure that no future idiotic Patrick sawyers’ types enter our country,” he added. Emmanuel Agomuo expressed his opinion thus; “I wish we can do the same to corruption.” A Cameroonian, Fang Roland said: “I’m from Cameroon. I hail you Nigeria health authority for a job well done. You are they king of Africa. Keep the fire burning and never allow it to go out.” Eniola said: “If Nigeria can conquer EVD within a short period of time… well, I’m sorry to say that we still have several EVD to fight among our politician, let us all stand up and fight against corruption in Nigeria.” In this respect, Nigerians now celebrate a healthier life, culminating with the return of their wards to school, and free extension of handshakes with their colleagues and acquaintances without fear and lots more. This is one milestone and outstanding achievements in the health sector and we say kudos to those that worked tirelessly in steering the boat while the wind raged. 4 Likes |

Thanks to the President, the health minister, the governor of Lagos state, other concerned persons, and above all, the late doctor - Stella, for her gallant fight against the contagious disease. Even though you succumbed to the disease, your name will never succumb in the history of Nigeria. |
