Benue State governor, Dr. Gabriel Suswam, declared on Tuesday that there is no vacancy for the Benue South Senatorial seat presently occupied by the President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, saying “Our decision to return him to the Senate in 2015 is irrevocable.” Foreclosing the hopes of likely aspirants to the seat, Governor Suswam said ” we in Benue state have endorsed the candidature of Mark to return to the Senate. The position of Senator Mark is not contestable. We want him back and there is no question or argument about it”. Addressing a crowded audience of Nigerians majority of whom were Benue indigenes at a book presentation “Suswam, Politics and Governance in Benue State ” in Abuja ,, Suswam maintained that “Mark’s Senatorial seat is not contestable. Mark remains our choice. There is no vacancy.” The governor noted that as the state is united behind president Goodluck Jonathan for 2015, so also “we are solidly behind Mark for the 2015 senatorial seat,” warning those who may have interest in the seat to think otherwise because “there is no vacancy”. According to the governor, “the Senate President has performed creditably and it is only logical that we give him the needed support and encouragement to continue the good works in the upper legislative Chamber.” In his remarks at the occasion, President Jonathan who spoke through the Vice President Namadi Sambo praised Governor Suswam’s giant strides in the state which he said transformed the state from once rural setting to entrepreneurial environment. Jonathan noted that Benue State remains the agricultural hub of Nigeria and one of the most peaceful states in the country making progress. Also speaking at the occasion, Senate President Mark said that beyond infrastructural development of the state under Suswam, one of his greatest achievements is the peace and unity between and among the various ethnic groups in the state. He noted that the governor is a man of honour who stands for the truth , justice and fairness as captured in the book.

When PDP Governors and party NEC members were endorsing GEJ for second tenure, I knew it will get to this level in the party where endorsement has to go down to the grass root. Every elected publice office holder in PDP wants that same kind of endorsement. Be it Rep members, senate, states house members, councilors etc. PDP always setting bad democratic examples.

Nigeria is indeed a joke. Does it mean is only David Mark that is credible in the whole senatorial district or is it that pdp being for what they are known for are so clueless to have will that seat to him? It means that as long as David mark and his types in Nigeria political arena are still available and are interested to continue their greedy ambition, the hope of the youth is dashed, the aspiration and ambition of many should wait or rather these aspirants should serve as political stooge. If these things happen in APC the pdps will go to the media shouting that APC is undemocratic and call them other names, I wonder what they think of themselves now.

this is the definition of democratic in PDP.

Last time I checked they both come from different senatorial districts, hence that decision should be left for the people of the senate president's constituency to decide.

And I understand Suswam himself is gunning for the senate; how about making the position he seeks to occupy which is presently occupied by someone else uncontestable, abi d person no be human being?? Politicians and their greed!! From house of reps to state government house and now he wants the senate!!! I pity the people of that State.

Sen Mark's experience is principally responsible for the harmonious relationship between the legislature and the executive since the inception of Jonathan's administration.

We certainly do not wish to return to the dark days of Obasanjo's government where inexorable bickerings among the arms of government were seriously deep-sixing delivery of good governance and dividends of democracy.

BTW, some US senators had been in Congress for over thirty years. Democratic culture gets deepened when there is a subtle blend of novelty and experience.
