Nobody knows as the Bible doesn't specify, but there are more likely candidates than the apple. Some people think the fruit was actually a fig - remember Adam and Eve clothed themselves in fig-leaves. Others think it was a grape, a pomegranate or a tomato. The poor old apple got the blame because of a mis-interpretation of the Latin word "malum" which was used as an adjective to describe "evil" but as a noun means "apple". |
