Wike Punches Opponent At PDP Peace Meeting by unuane1(m): 6:29am On Oct 10, 2014 |
•Thugs beat up journalists, politicians By Rotimi Akinwumi / Snr Correspondent, Abuja Political thugs from Rivers State believed to be supporters of Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, went wild on Thursday at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Office otherwise called Legacy House, Abuja, where they unleashed terror on anyone in sight. Wike himself added fire to the mayhem when he rained punches on a man suspected to be his opponent at the scene. The crisis broke out at the venue while playing host to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South South Integration Committee headed by Ilya Abubakar. In the midst of the pandemonium, the minister, on alighting from the conference room where the committee was sitting, reportedly engaged the man perceived to be one of his opponents in a shouting match, before personally raining punches on him. Speaking to newsmen after his ordeal in the hands of Wike, the man gave his name as Lolo Ibieneye, a former Commissioner for Water Resources under the administration of Peter Odili and Coordinator of the Jonathan/Sambo Campaign 2011 in Rivers State. Stakeholders in River State who wrote memos to the committee were invited to speak on their submission, but majority of those considered as opponents of Wike’s camp were denied access to the committee by the thugs who took charge of security at the venue. Of the 22 who showed up, only four persons considered as moderates were granted access to the room where the committee members were seated. The suspected thugs who came in their hundreds had besieged the premises as early as 8.00 a.m. and took over control of security at the Legacy House, pushing aside policemen at the venue. The policemen had to abandon their job of crowd control and looked on helplessly, as the thugs harassed anyone who made attempt to enter the main building where the committee was sitting. Journalists were not spared as well. Cameramen of Channels Television and Silverbird TV, Taye and Tunde Ajayi respectively, and a Vanguard newspaper’s reporter, Umoru Henry, were beaten mercilessly by the thugs while the policemen looked on. Victorson Agbanson of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), who was also harassed by the thugs, had hectic time recovering his digital tape recorder from the hoodlums who had seized it from him. Some of the petitioners opposed to Wike who had found their way into the main building were locked up by some of the thugs who took absolute control of the entire premises in a room directly opposite the conference room where the committee was sitting. As the scared men were shouting to attract the attention of the committee members, the thugs kept slapping them repeatedly, and shouted them down with a threat to kill them if they continued making noise. Daily Independent reporter, who was also held up in the lobby of the building but managed to find his way out after some time, observed that other antagonists of Wike who managed to enter the expanse compound were prevented from gaining access into the main building. They were indeed beaten up and had their clothes torn into shred. Among those beaten up within the premises were Sara Egbe, Tabotamuno Dick, a lawyer who was also at the venue to defend the memo he wrote. Tabotamuno was lucky to escape death though, as he was left badly bloodied after the incident. A professor, Owate Israel, was also beaten by the thugs. At a point, some of the aggrieved petitioners who were locked outside the main gate mobilised thugs themselves to counter the ones working for the minister but were chased away by the police. Those working for the minister were, however, left untouched. Some of the petitioners who spoke to newsmen at the venue of the crisis, represented by Anab Igbe, said what they were protesting against was violation of the constitution of the party. Igbe accused the Wike camp of trying to hijack the party structure with a view to denying the rest of the members the opportunity to contest the party ticket for Rivers State elections come 2015. Some of the aggrieved petitioners later stormed the Wadata Plaza National Secretariat of the PDP where they lodged their complaint to the party leaders. National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, who addressed the protesters at the gate of the party secretariat, assured them of a level playing field at the party primary. The PDP spokesman assured that the party members would be given the opportunity to elect and nominate aspirants of their choice who would eventually become the party’s candidate for elections in 2015. “We are promising you that that is what will happen in Rivers and every single state of the federation. “Our party is against consensus candidate and any idea of intimidating the people. There should be no intimidation and coercion,” he said. Metuh, while urging the protesters to remain calm, maintained that the party would continue to uphold true democratic tenets and principles in its nomination processes. He advised the youths to ensure they motivated and mobilised their people to ensure they come out to vote for their candidates in the 2015 general elections. Oni Quakers from Kalabari land, who spoke on behalf of the youths, said they were protesting the imposition of Ikwere indigenes on the people as the state’s next Governor. He stressed that Ikweres had ruled the state for 16 years, adding that it was time for the Ijaws to rule the state. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2014/10/wike-punches-opponent-pdp-peace-meeting/

For this singular act and show of shame by Wike,I expect Jonathan to sack him immediately. Imagine a whole minister of state fighting and exchanging blows. But alas! Nothing is going to happen! Shame on PDP and its leaders. Only in Nigeria shiit happens. 2 Likes |

The Story, if true, would have resulted in the aforementioned Minister resigning (in a developed country). But this is Nigeria. The reason why Minsters in Nigeria do not resign is that in a resource rich society like Nigeria, the people do not pay you via their taxes. You pay yourself from selling the oil money. So, as a result, the money won't dry up since you do not owe the people anything. And that is why we have had ministers who get away with impunity....because no matter what they do, the money from oyel will still flow in. Whereas in developed countries, a minister misbehaving is bad for business(eg companies pull out if a minister is corrupt or shows lack of moral probity...lower tax revenues)....which in turn is bad for government revenues. The minister in this case has to go. 1 Like |

The law of karma is playing out here. For all the troubles and distractions they gave to Rt. Hon Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, in Rivers state, they shall have it back in ten folds. Wike and PDP in Rivers state will fight until there will be no more PDP in Rivers state and Nigeria at large. What we are seeing now is just a child's play. By the time Wike eventually becomes a governor, Rivers people will clearly see and pay the price for having wike as their governor for 8yrs. By that time, Rivers people will see Governor Amaechi as a prophet whose advice Rivers people refused to heed to. Wike is one greedy politician I have never seen anywhere b4. 6 Likes |

Bash Ali has been begging to stage a world record fight, Wike should just fight him on the boxing ring instead off fighting his political opponent. If Wike his elected has Rivers governor, then the state is in doom. 2 Likes |

omerta:na so my sister! A faction of PDP in rivers state consisting of Ijaw ethnic group do not want Wike to contest because Ikwerres have been ruling Rivers State since 1999. They were protesting against it and even threatening Pres. Jonathan that if Wike is given the slot to represent PDP,the Ijaw nation will vote massively against him in the presidential elections. If Wike still goes ahead,it will be a good victory for APC both in rivers state and federal level. 2 Likes |
