Youngest-ever Nobel Prize recipient, Malala Yousafzai, has said that the President Goodluck Jonathan-led Federal Government need to re-double its efforts, in its bid to rescue the abducted Chibok girls.

As the continued incarceration of the over 200 Chibok girls entered its sixth month on Tuesday, the Pakistani girl-child education campaigner stated that the international community must continue to demand that the Nigerian authorities ensure that the girls regain their freedom.

In a message posted on her blog, communitymalala.org, on Tuesday – titled “Six months on, bring back our girls” – she explained that it would bring her great pleasure to see the Chibok girls reunited with their parents.

According to her, the abducted schoolgirls should not be denied the opportunity to go to school but should be empowered to receive what she described as “a quality and safe education.”

“Six months after the Boko Haram kidnapping of 273 Nigerian school girls, we must raise our voices again and louder than ever to demand that the more than 200 girls still in captivity be freed, reunited with their families, and receive a quality and safe education.

“I urge the Nigerian government and the international community to re-double their efforts to bring a quick and peaceful conclusion to this crisis and bring back our girls,” the 17-year-old Nobel laureate said.

With the #BringBackOurGirls campaign receiving an increased global attention on Tuesday, various international figures and organisations pledged to continue to stand by the Chibok girls.

Calling on the authorities to “take action” and rescue the schoolgirls, the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund lamented that it was already six months since they were abducted from their dormitory.

“On April 14, more than 200 girls were abducted. Join us in demanding their release. Take action; bring back our girls. We stand with the school girls of Nigeria,” UNICEF wrote on its official Facebook page.

Also, former British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, stated that the injustice being meted out to the Chibok girls must not last forever.

The United Nations Special Envoy for Global Education said the Chibok girls should be in school and not with their abductors.

“Six months on, no injustice can last forever,” Brown wrote on Twitter, while expressing optimism that the girls would regain their freedom.

The United Nations Organisation dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women, UN Women, stated that the world must not brush aside the plight of the Chibok girls amidst the Ebola epidemic.

United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, added that there was a need to expand quality education that empowers girls.

“The #BringBackOurGirls campaign must not be lost even in midst of the devastating Ebola pandemic. We know when we empower girls everybody benefits, girls who are educated are healthy and free,” a message on her Twitter page read.

Many online activists have also found their way back to the social media, to demand for the umpteenth time, greater action from the Federal Government for the release of the girls.

Social commentator, Dupe Killa, said the case of the missing Chibok girls and the initial denial of the incident by top Presidency officials had been a big embarrassment.

Cautioning the Federal Government against holding the belief that Nigerians would soon move on and forget about the schoolgirls’ abduction, Killa advised President Jonathan to mobilise resources within his reach to free the girls from their captors.

“Arguably, the worst thing that can happen to a child is to prematurely lose innocence and faith. Would President Jonathan not have enjoyed his tenure a bit more by resolving this missing Chibok girls’ disaster?

“This is at least damaging his legacies, if any. Instead of Jonathan and the sycophants who swarm him like bees to dedicate all they have to bring back our girls, they are hoping time passes and we forget,” she argued on Twitter.

Another online activist, Chitra Nagarajan, said the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the Chibok girls had provided the security agencies, especially the intelligence circles, an opportunity to redeem their image.

“My daughter told me an abducted American girl would be rescued. I was ashamed she thought US girls were worth more. What happened to our intelligence gathering? Don’t we have the State Security Service anymore? Abductions are reality and terrorism is against all,” she stated on her Twitter page.

Malala, we appreciate ur efforts at trying to make the president of the federal republic of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan a better president. But also, here is Africa where the elderly ones never listens to advice from younger persons. Its a cultural thing. It is seen as a taboo here in Nigeria. So Mr president will never take ur Advice.
