Abuja - Seven ministers in the cabinet of President Goodluck Jonathan have resigned their ministerial appointments.

The ministers include Labaran Maku (Information); Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu (Health); Nyesom Wike (State, Education); Samuel Ortom (State, Industry, Trade and Investment); Musiliu Obanikoro (State, Defence); Darius Ishaku (State, Niger Delta) and Emeka Wogu (Labour). The ministers quit their posts to pursue their political ambitions, the government said.

The ministers, whose departure had long been expected, will contest gubernatorial elections in their respective states. Earlier, President Jonathan was reported to have ordered members of his cabinet interested in elective posts to resign from office before October 20.
