More IPPs coming soon –Fashola

By Ekene Okoro Snr. Correspondent, Lagos

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has promised construction and commissioning of more Independent Power Plants (IPP) to boost electricity supply across the state.

Fashola made the promise while commissioning the Lagos Energy Academy.

The governor, while inspecting the facilities at the Academy located at the State Electricity Board, Works Yard Road, GRA, Ikeja area of the state added that the academy is expected to train many batches of power engineers and artisans who will provide the necessary human capital for lighting Lagos and country.

According to him, the Lagos Energy Academy will provide training for young people to become technicians and electrical engineers and provide training in generation, transmission and distribution.

Fashola explained that inside the Academy, there are modules on the sub-station that people see outside which has been simulated as well as transformers and all sorts of learning equipments and tools.

Harping on the Mainland Independent Power Project (IPP), he said it is the sixth the state is completing, hinting that it is now going through the pre-commissioning testing.

Fashola added that when it is commissioned, hopefully before the end of this month, it would provide 24 hours uninterrupted power supply to LASUTH, the Lagos High Court, the Lagos State Police Command and all of the public institutions around Ikeja.

He explained that what is behind the IPP is the sample of the solar installations that are going to be installed in all the public schools in Lagos State, adding that government already has contracts for 172 of them in partnership with DFID for which it has to provided counterpart funding .

Fashola added that, “Very soon you would see this installed in all our schools in Lagos, so we are taking the schools off regular generators, carbon energy. All public schools and you would see the solar panels on top of them, that is where the energy is going to come from and it would also have charging points for students who need to charge their IPADS.

“So this is a foundation for moving our schools finally to electronic and e-learning because there would be regular and uninterrupted power.

“We believe that over the years, there is a possibility to produce as many as 200,000 graduates who would have Siemens certification to be able to work anywhere. We are also partnering with a meter manufacturing company who is training them on how to diagnose faults with meters, the old analogue meters, the digital meters, the card meters, so that they are able to render service in terms of power generation transmission and distribution and all of the challenges.”

According to the Governor, the state government’s initiative is significant because it connects the curriculum of the academy with the needs of the society.

“This really now is connecting our curriculum to the needs of our society, the biggest needs of this society today is power and as the Discos are taking position, they are going to need men and women, boys and girls who will provide the manpower, the knowledge and this is where we have decided to invest, to connect these young people to jobs that are waiting to be taken so that they do not continue to complain about unemployment.

“So, we have taken them from all levels, from vocational centres, technical colleges and through our schools systems to give them a chance to start out a new career in power sector in Lagos”, he explained.

This project will power Lagos State University Teaching hospital (LASUTH), High Courts, water work, Old Secretariat complex and over 20KM public lighting . It is a commendable project if they can keep up with it. The country needs technicians and people that can independently and practically make things happen in all sectors.

What use to be oyinbo witch will come into the open with basic knowhow and it will make life so much easier for everybody. It would a visionary one,but these animals will soon tribalise it.

Collynzo28:

With his 2MW giant generators?
LMAO!
You definitely can't be serious.
[/s]

Ignorant village illiterate, all power plants are giant generators regardless their sizes.

This giant generator is taking our roads, bridges, hospitals and tons of state institutions of your worthless National grid with 24/7 power supply.

Your useless and corrupt uncles in abuja stole $20 billion and we are still in darkness

Their stolen $20 billion can not guarantee our hospitals 24/7 power supply, but Fashola's giant power plant can.

Your aso rock dullard himself can not guarantee any house, institution or hospital in Nigeria 24/7 power supply, but Fashola's giant generators can.

I'm 100% sure with $20 billion in Fashola's hands = uninterrupted power supply all over Nigeria including your village...

Our state hospitals operating in darkness is a thing of the past, thanks to Fashola's giant generators.

Fashola is achieving with ease what your governments since independence refused to achieve and guarantee and still can not guarantee.

Sometimes I ask.........
How can fashola work seamlessly with a very corrupt man as Tinubu without hassles and frictions on the many accumulations and yet find the guts to put up a saintly front. Fashola is a very dangerous man. He has his way with words but I just see a cunning but extremely corrupt individual.
