THISDAY gathered that a survey of the area by the agency had shown that farmers in the zone had shifted from food and cash crops cultivation to cannabis, to earn a living.

At a sensitisation campaign against the illicit drug in the zone on Friday, the NDLEA Chairman, Alhaji Ahmadu Giade, said the massive cultivation of the drug was already threatening the government's food security programme.

``It is unfortunate that the Fadama Farm Project that was launched in the region to ensure food security is being threatened.

``The North-East was previously not known for cannabis cultivation,’ the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quotes Giade as saying in a statement. The zone comprises Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Adamawa and Taraba States.

The NDLEA chairman also expressed concern about the sniffing of petrol, rubber, zakami, cough syrup and pit toilet concentrated odour by some youths in the zone.

``Our records show that some illicit substances, such as cough syrup, zakami, petrol and odour from toilet are being abused by youths in the zone. This is ungodly,'' Giade said.

He announced that 362 drug suspects were arrested, while 4,901.658 kg of illicit drugs were seized between January and June, adding that 216 suspects were also convicted during the period.

Giade said 96 drug addicts were counselled, treated and rehabilitated during the period.

He also said the Borno State Command intercepted 2.3 tonnes of cannabis made ready to be exported, while a car conveying 233.4 kg of cannabis concealed in foodstuff was also seized by the Bauchi Command.

He urged Houses of Assembly in the zone to legislate against the consumption of the illicit substances.
