Ex-Italy under-21 footballer Piermario Morosini has died following a suspected heart attack on the pitch, football officials say.

The midfielder was playing for Livorno in the Serie B match at Pescara when he fell to the ground in the 31st minute.

A defibrillator was used and Morosini, 25, was taken to hospital. The game was halted with other players in tears.

All league games in Italy this weekend have been called off following Morosini's death.

Morosini had been on loan to Livorno from the Serie A club Udinese.

He collapsed face down and appeared to be in convulsion. The referee's assistant drew the referee's attention and he stopped the game.

The footballer was taken to Pescara's Santo Spirito hospital by ambulance, but he could not be revived.

Atalanta youth team chief Mino Favini reveals the tragedies that blighted Piermario Morosini’s brief life. “He was golden.”

The 25-year-old collapsed during today’s Pescara-Livorno Serie B match and was owned by Udinese, but grew up in the prestigious Atalanta youth academy.

“He was golden, always trying to help his family. That was Piermario Morosini,” explained Favini.

“He grew up at Atalanta with me and I saw him playing as a very young boy. He was a fantastic lad who always rushed to help everyone. He lived for his family.

“Yet he was such an unlucky man. He lost both parents young, his brother and sister have physical handicaps. His little brother recently killed himself by jumping out of a window. He had the most unfortunate life.

“Udinese signed him from us and he was very talented. He had a strong career, was respected by all his teammates. Everywhere he went, people spoke highly of him. He had a heart of gold.”

Former Vicenza teammate Raffaele Schiavi, now a defender at Padova, posted a picture of Morosini’s smiling face on Twitter.

“Despite the many family problems he had, Moro always had a smile on his face and never let those issues come through. It’s how I want to remember him.”

Jeeesssss!!!!!!!!! why was he taken to the so called "Spirito" hospital? They are the cause of his death. Frankly he should have been taken to some resurrection hospital instead of the Spirito thereby presuming him dead b4 going to the hospital.

2 bad he died so young after all that he hes been through in life,should be enjoying the fruit of his labor,but the enemy decide 2 snatch life out of him,so sad,hope he died in christ,if not,that would be the worse,cuz there is no repentance in the grave

Footballers are playing too many games.

Back when I started following the Champions League in 1993/94 season (the one where AC Milan beat Barca 4-0 in the final), there were just 8 teams (the League leaders).

Now the format has been increased to accommodate the teams from Eastern Europe. Now a typical team plays on Saturday, then plays again on Tues/Wed, then another Saturday, etc. If you are a national team player from South America, you could play for your club in Europe, fly 20 hours to meet up with a World Cup qualifier of friendly on a FIFA day, then fly back to rejoin your club, then play on Saturday, then another game mid-week, etc.

THERE ARE TOO MANY MATCHES NOW. Even the May to Aug break is now truncated because of playing tours to increase the fan base in order to raise money by selling club jerseys and memorabilia to finance the excessive salaries of footballers.

The root of all this is that the game has become so highly commercialised and the players are the ones paying the price. It is time to stop the rot before we start seeing players collapsing every alternate game. This is too much!

Rest in peace dearie. U were a wonderful person and you will sure be missed. Rest in the bosom of the Almighty!

I played football at amateur level. Football is quite tasking, and could easily trigger a heart attack. Antonio Puerta, Daniel Jarque, Mark Vivian Foe, et cetera, and now, Morosini. Strict measures have to be put in place to safeguard the lives of these young men. Rest in peace, man.
