There is fire on the mountain and more troubles for GEJ-led PDP.

•…threaten to shut down govt
• Aggrieved Ondo leaders storm Abuja

Senators of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have threatened to shut down the government of President Goodluck Jonathan for allowing the state governors to take over the structures of the party.

The senators, who were reacting to the outcome of last Saturday’s congresses at the states, where most of them lost to the candidates of the governors, vowed to support their colleagues in the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, to impeach President Jonathan if it became necessary.

To demonstrate their seriousness, the lawmakers yesterday shut down the Senate as the lawmakers boycotted legislative activities by adjourning sitting without considering a single item on the Order Paper.

The action of the senators was taken at a closed-door meeting held by the PDP senators’ caucus yesterday at the new wing of the Senate Building, National Assembly Complex, Abuja, immediately after adjourning the sitting.

The senators also agreed not to consider further executive bills and businesses, including the 2015 budget proposal.

One of the senators, detailed to communicate the outcome of the meeting to journalists said: “You were aware that we adjourned sitting today. That is what we will continue to do. President Goodluck Jonathan has lost the Senate. Since he has left the PDP structures in the hands of the governors, let the governors also come and do our job. We are going to shut the government.

“What is it that the President asked that we ‘ve not given to him? We are going to show solidarity with the Speaker of House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal. We will not sit again. There will be no consideration of the Medium Term Expenditure Framework, MTEF, and there will be no budget. We may also begin his impeachment.

“When we invoked the doctrine of necessity, we even proceeded to give him full option. We did the same thing on the state of emergency. But now, he has lost the Senate.

“By the time the House of Representatives resumes on December 3, most of PDP members in the House would have lost their return bids and they will quickly move to APC and populate the party.”

Although yesterday’s plenary was adjourned till today, the senators also vowed to repeat the same action today, threatening that the trend would continue indefinitely until the President addresses their grievances.

Following the Council of State meeting at the Presidential Villa yesterday, it was not possible for the Senate President David Mark to preside at plenary because of his attendance, but the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, presided.

The senators also said that in the event that Mark decided to frustrate their resolve, he would be abandoned and left alone to preside over an empty chamber.

The senators are worried that by the outcome of last Saturday’s state congresses, their political careers had been ruined while those of the governors had been brightened.

According to the lawmakers, President Jonathan should also go ahead to deploy the services of the governors to legislate for the National Assembly.

In what appeared as the playing out of a well-rehearsed script, once the senators had adopted the votes and proceedings for October 28, Ekweremadu read a letter addressed to Mark by the President, imploring the Senate to confirm one Okwu Joseph Nnanna as a Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

Subsequently, the Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, who is one of those bruised during the Cross River State congress, moved the motion that all items on the Order Paper be stood down and sitting adjourned till today to enable them attend a caucus meeting of PDP senators.

The motion was supported by even the APC senators. With that, the doors of the Senate were shut yesterday.

Meanwhile, all is not yet well with the Ondo State chapter of the party as aggrieved leaders have again stormed Abuja.

This followed their disagreement with Governor Olusegun Mimiko over the recent harmonisation and sharing of political offices ahead of the 2015 elections.

The state chapter became embroiled in crisis after Mimiko defected from the Labour Party to the PDP in October and the subsequent dissolution of the Ebenezer Alabi-led state executive by the PDP National Executive Committee.

A reliable source told our correspondent that the aggrieved members, comprising leaders of the Alabi group, arrived in Abuja on Monday and were bent on ensuring that the thorny issues between them and Mimiko were resolved before returning to Ondo.

They reportedly held a meeting on Monday evening with the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, Hon. Kingsley Kuku.

Kuku was said to have played a significant role in brokering peace between the two groups and ensuring that the party remained united.

The special adviser is from Arogbo-Ijaw in Ondo State and one of the key backers of the party in the state before the return of Mimiko.

It was learnt that the grouse of the former leaders of the party was the slots allotted to Mimiko in the recent harmonisation of political offices in the state.

The Alabi group reportedly rejected the nine House of Assembly slots allotted to it as against 17 for Mimiko.

The group wants 10 slots and 16 for Mimiko.

It also disputed the six House of Reps slots for Mimiko and the three allotted to the group, seeking a 5:4 ratio.

There is, however, no contention in the senatorial slots as two was allotted to the Mimiko group and one to the former leaders.

“If this anomaly is redressed, among others, the dissolution of the state PDP exco and the handing over of the party structure to Mimiko won’t be an issue anymore,” one of the aggrieved leaders said.

The group is to also meet with the Chief of Staff to the President, Brig-Gen. Jones Arogbofa, during the week. He is expected to take their case to President Jonathan.

Exactly. Politics is too attractive and rewarding in Nigeria. We need to make it less attractive to make any meaningful progress.

Serious?

So, now you learn that the ambition you have, is replicated in others. And that loyalty to yourself alone that you insist on, is what brought Lucifer down

Good luck telling others that the only person that matters is you

Going by how things are done with politics in this country, it is safe to say that Nigeria is half-dead and requires a thorough overhauling of the system for it not to collapse completely. Too many greedy politicians.

What is your point here??

Do you have to blame the president when the states select people other than those already in senate positions to represent them in the senate? Is the senatorial positions their birth right? How many genuine legislations to better the lives of nigerians have they made? how long have they been in the senate without any thing to show? common man! use your brain. This whole thing is not about GEJ or state governors, it should be about the right representation.

I have a lot on my mind concerning these issues but i barely have time to say it. Nigerians should wake up!

my dear, when the people u elected to represent u abandon the legislative responsibility enthrusted to them by ur vote just because they have personal disagreement with the president, that is pure selfishness my dear. But just because the move is against the president and number one apc enemy then to u the show of shame not minding the effect on the masses when bills are neither deliberated nor passed is just politics and it is welcomed.
