What Is Arthroscopy? by Orthodocng: 6:03pm On Nov 07, 2014
Arthroscopy is a minimally-invasive procedure used for the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting joints. The doctor can directly view the internal structures of a joint using an instrument called an arthroscope.

Orthopedic surgeons use arthroscopy to diagnose and treat joint problems. An arthroscope is a small, tube shaped instrument that is used to look inside a joint.
It consists of a system of lenses, a small video camera, and a light for viewing. The camera is connected to a monitoring system that allows the doctor to view a joint through a very small incision. The arthroscope is often used in conjunction with other tools that are inserted through another incision.

The joint most frequently examined using arthroscopy is the knee. However, arthroscopy can be used to examine other joints, including the following:

• Shoulder
• Ankle
• Hip
• elbow

This is far better than opening the joint to operate. The patient has just small openings in the joint and can go home earlier and start daily activities much faster than after open surgery.

Some symptoms that could suggest that you need an arthroscopy include.Pain in the knee, Hearing of a clicking noise in the knee, swelling, feeling of the knee "shifting" when you run or walk. Other symptoms include shoulder or ankle pain.

Visit your doctor and explain your symptoms to him/her for advice.

Doc..Plz sir what's d difference between invasive and non invasive surgery? And how minimally invasive can a surgery be? Thanks..
Re: What Is Arthroscopy? by Orthodocng: 7:47pm On Nov 07, 2014
Minimally invasive surgery means performing an operation via small cuts in the body to reduce damage to normal body parts. It is also called keyhole surgery. The instruments are introduced through small holes called portals. A telescope is introduced into the body. The image is displayed via a mini camera on a television screen and operation is performed with small instruments .

The advantage is short hospital stay(some times the patient goes home same day of surgery) and earlier recovery.

All types of surgery involves some degree of 'invasiveness' to correct an anomaly in the body.

Traditional open techniques which involve large incisions are still very much in use all over the world but are gradually being replaced by minimally invasive techniques like arthroscopy( arthro= joint ,scopy =look), look into the joint!

Non invasive surgery means no surgery!!

is this arthroscopy different from image guided surgery? Like the ones they do while running a c-arm.
Re: What Is Arthroscopy? by Orthodocng: 5:53am On Nov 08, 2014
Arthroscopy is quite different from image guided surgery using c arm. This involves using a special xray machine during an operation to guide use of instruments inside the body eg placement of implants during bone surgery or insertionof pace makers in cardiology.

There is no direct visualization of the interior of the joint as occurs during arthroscopy, just use of xrays to help an operation. In the picture below a c arm/image intensifier is used to visualize the back bones.
