October 20, 2020, is a memorable day for Nigerian Youths. On this day Nigerian youths came out en masse to protest police brutality in the Country. A good number of celebrities came out in solidarity with the movement.

There were reports that live ammunition was shot and people killed at the Lekki tollgate. This position was earlier refuted by some Government officials and celebrities. Mr Lai Mohammed had threatened to sue CNN for reporting the incident at the time.

In a swift turn of events, the final report of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry and Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses states that there were shootings, some people lost their lives, and scores injured.

The year 2021 has seen wide acceptance of Afrobeat internationally. This is evident in the sold out shows by Nigerian artistes in the UK, France, USA and a host of other countries.

Nigerian artists made a strong representation for this year’s Music Of Black Origin (MOBO) awards with important nominations as seen in the list that was released.

Burna Boy, Davido, Wizkid and Tiwa Savage are no strangers to this award, as they have been nominated on previous occasions. The aforementioned artists were nominated for the award in 2020 and Burna Boy clinched the Best International Act award.

We have seen them sell out shows with 10,000, 20,000 capacities, which goes to show how much afro-beats have generally been accepted throughout the world.

The next generation artistes like Ckay, Tems and Buju have enjoyed massive recognition this year alone, not only locally but internationally as well.

The African Music Awards (AFRIMA) is a yearly award presentation event, where awards are given to successful artists in different categories. The 2021 edition is set to hold in Lagos between November 19 and 21.

Many music lovers are looking forward to seeing their favourite artists go home with awards in the categories that they were nominated. However, there could be shockers awaiting fans as big artists like Davido, Burna Boy and Wizkid may not win in their categories of nomination.
