Nicholas is a Nigerian born in the slums of Maroko (now demolished) in Lagos. He is the ninth child in a family of eleven siblings. Competing for his parents attention with ten other siblings will have a profound effect on his personality. This has made him very competitive. He obtained his first degree in English language from the Lagos State University, Ojo.

Nicholas started his journalism career in 2008 with NEXT Newspapers (www.234next.com).  He has won several awards and recognitions in investigative reporting. In 2009 Nicholas won the online category of the Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporters with the story on the proliferation of hired armies in the troubled Niger-Delta Region of Nigeria. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Lagos State chapter on Thursday insisted that the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is still ill and needs urgent prayers from Lagosisians.

The party called on residents to pray for Tinubu’s quick recovery, even as it claimed he was jetted out of the country for treatment in a London hospital.

The PDP asked Tinubu’s family and the Lagos State Government not to be secretive about the health condition of the former governor.


In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Taofik Gani, the party said Lagosians were interested in knowing the true state of health of the former governor “whose medical bill is being paid with their taxes.”

He said, “We wish the former governor, Bola Tinubu, quick recovery as we are made to know from the grapevine that he is ill and in a hospital outside the country. We also feel that the family and the state government should have the obligation to let Lagosians know the actual state of his health.

“It will not be a bad thing if the former governor appears on television or speaks on phone for broadcast. Indeed Lagosians are humanitarian and would readily support him in prayers. Such honest disclosure will also dispel rumours of his death or paralysis that is being spread around”.

There had been doubts over Tinubu’s health status but the politician insisted that, “I’m as fit as a fiddle. There was nothing wrong with me before I left the country”.

A former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, has vowed to stop corruption if his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, is elected to power.
Mr. Buhari said the APC has a clear objective of securing and efficiently managing Nigeria.

“We will stop corruption and make the ordinary people, the weak and the vulnerable our top priority,” he said.
The former head of state spoke while inaugurating a 250-bed Orthopaedic Hospital worth N1.12 billion constructed by the Sokoto State Government in Wamakko, Wamakko Local Government Area.
Mr. Buhari was on a two-day official visit to the state to inaugurate and inspect several development projects executed by the state government.
Speaking during the commissioning, Mr. Buhari said he was impressed with the governor for initiating and completing the project.
“It will further help in saving the lives of accident and emergency victims in the state and save them the trouble of travelling outside the state to seek medical services.
“I am so impressed with the systematic methods Wamakko had employed to execute all his people-oriented projects.
“You should consider yourself lucky and I am very pleased with the even spread of your projects across the 23 local governments of the state,’’ he said.
Earlier, Gov. Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State said his administration had accorded top priority to the health sector from 2007 to date.

Mr. Wamakko said that the state government had provided a general hospital for each of the 23 local governments.
“There are 240 primary health centres in the state, each provided with an ambulance, adequate medical personnel and equipment, among others.
“All these were in addition to several interventionist projects successfully implemented by the state government in the health sector,” he said.


The Commissioner for Health, Ahmed Aliyu, said that the hospital would commenced the provision of orthopaedic and trauma services.
Mr. Aliyu said the hospital was provided with adequate medical doctors, orthopaedic surgeons, nurses, boreholes, three generators, three ambulances, and four utility vehicles, among others.

It has been reported that the hometown residence of the acting governor has been taken over by the insurgents who made it one of their operational base. One of the Boko Haram commanders was allegedly residing in it.

As at the time of filing this report, the residences of Fintiri and his PA have become a mecca of a sort, as the two houses were inundated with sympathizers who trooped to condole with the families.

The son of the late patriarch, Tanko Wazintu, who looked pale and disheveled, said his mother and sister had resorted to burying the corpse of his father as no one could assist them after they had waited for more than 72 hours.

“My sister and step-mother were the ones that were forced to dig a hole to bury my father after being forced to sleep with his corpse for more than 72 hours,” he said.

Reports indicated that, in their drive to have more fighters, the insurgents have resorted to abducting able-bodied men whom they usually conscript into their army by force.

One of the youths forcefully recruited by the insurgents but was lucky to escape, Mr Onyebuchi Romanus, said his escape from the den of the insurgents was like escaping from the tiger’s mouth.

The death toll arising from the collapsed 6-storey building at the Synagogue Church of All Nations has hit 70 as at 10:43a.m. on Wednesday, while more dead bodies are still under the debris.

Spokesperson, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed this to P.M.NEWS Wednesday morning, saying that the dead toll is now 70 as rescue operation is still on to remove more victims trapped in the rubble.

“We now have 70 dead and 131 rescued alive. More are likely to be recovered today. We need less distraction to enable us concentrate on the operation to possibly conclude today,” he said.

South Africa alone said it lost 67 citizens to the tragedy, according to its president, Jacob Zuma, even as reports say at least 300 South Africans were at the Synagogue last week when the guest house collapsed.

President Zuma had said on Tuesday that at least 67 South Africans had been killed when the building collapsed while extra floors were being added to the two existing floors.

A spokesman for South Africa’s foreign ministry said on Twitter on Wednesday that the figure of 67 needed to be treated with “caution”. Nigerian emergency services on Tuesday put the total death toll from the accident so far at 62. There was no immediate explanation for the discrepancy.

Late on Tuesday Zuma told national broadcaster SABC that an unknown number of South Africans were “not yet accounted for” and that the nation needed to “grieve together.”

Zuma’s spokesman Mac Maharaj told national broadcaster SABC on Wednesday that the government believed that around 300 South Africans from four to five tour groups from the country were visiting the church last Friday but it was not clear how many were on the spot when the tragedy struck.

“It’s a very popular church with South Africans,” he said.

The church, lead by the charismatic “Prophet” T.B. Joshua, attracts a global following of Christians who believe he is able to perform miracles including curing the ill and raising the dead from the grave.

At 2 a.m. also on Tuesday, a 45-year-old woman reportedly walked out of the rubble alive after being trapped for about four days.

The Synagogue tragedy is the worst case of collapsed building in the history of Lagos State, and with the death toll still mounting, there may be little chance of rescuing survivors among those still trapped.

General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu when asked whether the government would confiscate the property of Synagogue due to the collapse, he was very evasive, saying that it was too early to comment on that as saving lives was more important to the government now.

Stakeholders in the built industry have been calling for thorough probe of the Synagogue tragedy, as it was believed that no approval was sought before more floors were added to the collapsed building.

Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy, continued its downward spiral on the Global Competitive Index (GCI) as the country fell seven places to 127th position this year, from the 120th position it was last year.

The development was largely attributed to what the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Competitiveness Report (GCR) 2014-2015, which was made available exclusively to THISDAY by WEF, described as the country’s weakened public finances as a result of lower oil exports.

But commenting on the GCR, the Chief Executive Officer, National Competitiveness Council of Nigeria (NCCN), Mr. Chika Mordi, who spoke to THISDAY, faulted the rankings, pointing out that the report, which referred to Nigeria as Africa’s largest economy, used the old GDP figures in its calculations. This, according to him, worsened the nation’s position.

Continuing, the GCR pointed out that institutions in Nigeria remained weak with a ranking of 129 out of 144. Other factors that led to the country’s drop in the GCR were insufficiently protected property rights, high corruption, and undue influence.

In addition, it stated that the deterioration in national security in Nigeria, which was also ranked 139 out of 144, remained dire.

“Nigeria must continue to upgrade its infrastructure (134th) as well as improve its health and primary education (143rd). Furthermore, the country is not harnessing the latest technologies for productivity enhancements, as demonstrated by its low rates of ICT penetration,” it stated.

However, on the upside, the report noted that Nigeria benefits from its relatively large market size (33rd out of 144), which bears the potential for significant economies of scale; a relatively efficient labour market (40th out of 144) driven by its flexibility (20th out of 144).

Furthermore, the GCR also acknowledged the country’s solid financial market (67th out of 144), following its gradual recovery from the 2009 crisis.
“However, poor availability and affordability of finance in general and the difficulties in obtaining loans in particular (137th) remain an important bottleneck to economic growth.
“Ahead of the 2015 election cycle, it will thus be critical to keep the ongoing reform momentum to diversify the economy and increase the country’s long-term competitiveness,” it added.

Overall, Switzerland emerged top on the ranking for the sixth consecutive year, and was closely followed by Singapore, USA, Finland and Germany in that order.

However, in Africa, Mauritius which was ranked 39th in the GCI reaffirmed its position as the continent’s most competitive economy.

But South Africa, Africa’s second largest economy, also dropped to 56th on the index. South Africa, according to the report, is now the third most competitive BRICS economy after China (28th) and Russia (53rd).
African economies enjoyed mixed success in their attempts to become more competitive, according to the GCR.

Other countries ranked on the index were Lesotho (107th), Cape Verde (114th), Botswana (74th), Namibia (88th), Zambia (96th), Ghana (111th), Senegal (112th) and Swaziland (123rd).

Among the oil-exporting economies, Gabon was the highest-ranked economy (106th) followed by Cameroun (116th), Nigeria, Angola (140th) and Chad (143rd).

Among Africa’s low-income economies, the most improved was Ethiopia, which recorded the biggest leap, rising nine places to 118th.

The report stated that despite years of bold monetary policy, global economic growth remained at risk as several countries struggled to implement growth-boosting structural reforms.

Commenting on Nigeria’s ranking, Mordi said the reasons adduced for the deteriorating rankings were Boko Haram and weaker institutions, an assertion he argued was “profoundly rebutted by our Ebola containment relative to countries ranked at par or better than us”.

“Poorer public finance, again a jaundiced opinion, as our public finances are stronger with lower deficit financing, fiscal restraint, a stable currency and single digit inflation, in contrast with Ghana whose currency is in free fall and debt has skyrocketed.
“Yet Ghana has an improved score on the same parameter; and weak health and primary education where we ranked the second worst in the world. Do you truly believe that?,” he asked.

Although he acknowledged that a high GCI ranking was good to have, he said it remains an opinion.

Mordi insisted that the most important opinion was that of the investment community and the reality of the country’s position.

He explained: “In this year’s World Street Journal survey of multinational CEOs, Nigeria ranked first as an emerging market investment destination. Investors vote with their wallet and Nigeria’s FDI remains the highest in Africa.

“Finally, the WEF GCI is a lagging indicator and does not reflect the actions taken this year. We expect an improvement and better allignment with reality in subsequent years as the NCCN, which came into full operations nine months ago has taken fundamental steps and put building blocks in place to improve our competitiveness.

“The most significant of these steps is a brain trust of 56 of the brightest minds and practitioners in Nigeria. They commenced work in April and include leading businessmen, CEOs of large corporates, CEOs and partners of the top multinational consulting firms, leading academics and regulators.”

The GCR’s rankings are based on the GCI, which was introduced by WEF in 2004.

Competitiveness includes the set of institutions, policies and factors that determine the level of productivity of a country. GCI scores are calculated by drawing together country-level data in 12 categories – the “pillars of competitiveness” – to create a comprehensive picture of a country’s economic performance.

The 12 pillars are: institutions; infrastructure; macroeconomic environment; health; primary education, higher education and training; goods market efficiency; labour market efficiency; financial market development; technological readiness; market size; business sophistication; and innovation.
