The president of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo, Kaduna State Branch, Chief Austin C. Amaechi, has said that the Igbo would not abandon their multi-billion naira investment in the North. He said his people in the region would not be forced to go back to the East despite the wave of insecurity, adding that they are at home in the North. Speaking yesterday at his inauguration as the newly selected president of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo, Kaduna State Branch, Amaechi said that since there are a lot of Igbo people in most northern parts of the country, it is important to have a leader that can enhance peaceful co-existence between them and their hosts, as well as protect their investments. “The Igbo currently have investments of over N40 billion in the North. So how can they leave that and go to the East? Economically, we are at home in the North. We also want to participate politically. We will therefore ensure that we pursue peace with our host communities and among the Igbo communities. This is because once there is peace, our investments and other people’s investments will be secured. If there is no peace, it is not only the investments of the Igbo that would be threatened; other Nigerians would also be affected. “There are a lot of Igbo people in most of the northern parts of the country. So there is the need to have a sound leader to ensure that the good relationship between them and their host communities is sustained. My mission is therefore to enhance an understanding between the Igbo in Kaduna State and their host communities,’’ he said. Amaechi was selected to replace the late Engineer Andrew Nwaekwe, who passed away in 2012. He called on the people to disregard the call by some groups that the Igbo should leave the North ahead of the 2015 general elections. “I am aware that our brothers in the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) have called on the Igbo in the North and outside Igbo communities in the East to come home. As the new Igbo leader in Kaduna, I hereby call on our people to realise that we are comfortable here in the North. We are waxing stronger and stronger. We are feeling at home; hence we have no reason to think of going home. We are not just coming to the North; we have been in the North from the beginning. I call on all the Igbo in the North to participate in the 2015 general elections and ensure that credible leaders, who will protect, not only the interest of the host communities, but the interest of the non- natives, are elected into offices. “I also want to say that during the Nigerian civil war, the properties of the Igbo were secured by northerners. And after the war when the Igbo came back, our properties were handed over to us, including the money collected from rents. That helped us to re-establish ourselves after the war. I don’t want to point to other parts of Nigeria where the investments of the Igbo were declared abandoned properties. That never happened in the North. That is giving us the confidence to continue investing in the North despite the security challenges. I can assure you that the investment will continue because very soon, the security challenges will come to an end by the Grace of God,” he said. http://dailytrust.com.ng/sunday/index.php/news/17988-igbos-are-at-home-in-north-ohanaeze |

SUBTLE trouble is brewing at the Presidency over the last-minute decision of Jigawa State Governor, Dr. Sule Lamido, to challenge President Goodluck Jonathan in next year’s presidential election. The two-term governor’s decision is said to have rattled President Jonathan and the party, which had long concluded that the race would be a straight fight between the president and others from the opposition parties. In fact, given its internal permutations, the PDP believes that Jonathan would have a smooth sail to the election, as no other candidate would be able to challenge him and get victory at its planned national convention, which some see as a mere formality for the incumbent to be crowned. Lamido However, Saturday Vanguard gathered from very reliable Presidential sources that there is apprehension in the Presidency following the confirmation of Lamido’s plans. One of the sources said that the Presidency and the PDP had initially dismissed the rumoured ambition of the governor with the hope that it was mere speculation that would fizzle out with time. A reliable source said that based on the information that Lamido had concluded plans to run for the presidency, Jonathan immediately summoned him to the Presidential Villa to clear the air on the issue. One of the sources said that Jonathan was shell shocked when Lamido stormed the Villa recently and told the President openly that he was keen on running in the next polls. “At that point, the President was shocked to hear from Lamido that his presidential ambition should not be seen as mere rumour, as he had made up his mind to run against him,” a presidential source said. “The way Lamido spoke with the President showed that he was not ready to back down from the race and the way he spoke about the matter was a bit unsettling to Mr. President, who had all along regarded him as one of the governors, who could not move against him,” the source explained. Lamido was said to have told the President that he had made up his mind to contest against him in the next polls despite a deliberate attempt by forces opposed to his ambition to frame him and his children up. The governor, it was learnt, told the President that he was upset by the frequent embarrassment of his children by some agencies of government over allegations that one of them passed through an airport without declaring $40,000 in his possession. He is said to have also drawn the president’s attention to the fact that there was a deliberate attempt by government agencies to tarnish his family’s image all in a bid to make him drop his presidential ambition but that he was not ready to back out of the race. The action of the governor is said to have angered the Presidency, which promptly reported him to the National leadership of the PDP and asked it to call him to order. It was learnt that Lamido was emboldened to go for the top job by some of his governor friends and prominent Nigerian leaders, who are uncomfortable with the way things are going in the land. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is a friend and father figure to Lamido. Almost at the same time early in the month, documents began to fly about that Lamido received gratification of N1.3 billion from two contractors, who had completed two projects valued at N13 billion. Although an EFCC agent admitted last night that the agency had been investigating the Lamido family for a long time, he denied that the information on the N1.3 billion bribe allegation was instigated by the Presidency. “Let me tell you that since we arrested Lamido’s son at the airport over non-declaration of $40,000, our operatives have been investigating the family’s account and it is not at the instance of the Presidency as some people are alleging,” the EFCC official said. But confronted yesterday to confirm or deny his rumoured ambition, Lamido declined to make a categorical statement on the matter. The governor however foreclosed the possibility of going to the Senate as is the practice of most of his outgoing colleagues. According to him, the atmosphere for him to become president is not yet there, adding that it is better for him to seek a higher office than to go the legislature to make laws after implementing laws passed by others for eight years. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/08/2015-sule-lamidos-entry-rattles-presidency-pdp/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter

That was President Vladimir Putin's message on Friday, the same day a British government source claimed that Russian troops had significantly ratcheted up their military incursion into Ukraine. Moscow doesn't want or intend to wade into any "large-scale conflicts," Putin insisted at a youth forum, state-run Itar-Tass reported. A few breaths later, he made the point that Russia is "strengthening our nuclear deterrence forces and our armed forces," making them more efficient and modernized. "I want to remind you that Russia is one of the most powerful nuclear nations," the President said. "This is a reality, not just words." He later warned, "We must always be ready to repel any aggression against Russia and (potential enemies) should be aware ... it is better not to come against Russia as regards a possible armed conflict." The comments came the same day that Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused NATO of using "images from computer games" to -- in his view -- falsely make the case that Russian troops are in Ukraine. Lavrov said "hiding the evidence is an outstanding characteristic of the U.S. and many EU countries" with regard to Ukraine. See the NATO satellite images The thing is, many in the West don't believe much of anything coming out of Russia. White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Friday that -- whatever the Kremlin says -- the reality is Russian troops are inside the Ukraine and have fired on Ukrainian military positions. "Those denials are completely without credibility," Earnest said. http://edition.cnn.com/2014/08/29/world/europe/ukraine-crisis/index.html?c=&page=1 |

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) to desist from using the logos of the APGA to campaign for President Goodluck Jonathan’s second term presidential election. Also, the party has asked the Inspector General of Police (IG), Sulieman Abba to compel the party to stop the fraudulent campaign strategy of APGA, where it prints the President’s campaign posters with the APGA flags and logo. Addressing newsmen in Abuja yesterday, the State Chairman of PDP in Anambra State, Chief Ken Emeakayi also complained about the rally expected to hold tomorow in Awka, the State capital tagged, “APGA Jonathan, Jonathan APGA Rally”, arguing that it is against the Electoral Act as two political parties don't field a candidate for elections. According to the PDP state chairman, “You cannot campaign for any political party with the logo and pictures of another political party’s candidate. This is fraud. If you want to support President Jonathan, do it, but not to print the President’s picture with the logo of another political party.” Emeakayi said the billboards that litter the streets of Awka and the tomorrow rally are all deceptions as the President is not a member of the APGA, explaining that what is happening is against the Electoral Law 2010 (as amended). He explained that, “the action of APGA by campaigning and printing the billboards of President Jonathan by using the APGA colours and Logo is against section 37 of the Electoral Act. This is capable of nullifying the electoral chances of the President as a PDP candidate in the 2015 presidential elections. “This is intentional knowing fully well that President Jonathan and Vice-President Namadi Sambo are not members of APGA, yet APGA as a political party is printing Jonathan’s posters and billboards on the logo and colour of APGA. “By the action of APGA National Chairman hoisting and distributing Jonathan’s pictures and with his own pictures under the APGA logo is fraudulent and deceptive as it would confuse Nigerians and make them think that President Jonathan would be contesting the 2015 presidential elections on the platform of APGA as a political party”, he stated. According to the Anambra State PDP chairman, the most annoying part of it is the Saturday August 30 rally tagged: “Join Jonathan Journey” with the inscription “Jonathan, APGA, APGA Jonathan,” with the pictures of the President, the National Chairman of APGA, Victor Umeh and Governor Willy Obiano of Anambra State, under the APGA colours and logo. On why he dragged the Inspector General of Police to court, he said, “we want him to be alive to his duty by stopping this fraud by APGA as two political parties cannot sponsor a candidate. It is either you are a member of PDP or you join the PDP, as there is nothing as a joint candidate in the operating 2010 Electoral Act as contained in the letters of section 37. Section 37 of the 2010 Electoral Act states that it is only a political party that sponsors candidates and not two political parties. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/pdp-asks-apga-not-to-use-its-logo-to-campaign-for-jonathan/187638/
