To get a chance to interview for any of these positions, answer the simple riddle below.

Here's the puzzle:
"Three guests check into a hotel room. The front desk officer says the bill is N30,000, so each guest pays N10,000. Later the front desk officer realizes the bill should only be N25,000.

To fix this, he gives the attendant N5,000 to return to the guests. On the way to the room, the attendant realizes that he cannot divide the money equally. Since the guests didn't know the total of the revised bill, the bellhop decides to just give each guest N1,000 and keep N2,000 as a tip for himself.

Each guest got N1,000 back: so now each guest only paid N9,000; bringing the total paid to N27,000. The attendant has N2,000. And N27,000 + N2,000 = N29,000 so, if the guests originally handed over N30,000, what happened to the remaining N1,000?"

There is no remaining 1000 naira, because the idea is they paid 30000 naira and 3000 naira(1000 naira each) was returned to them, meaning they paid only 27000 naira in all, where 25000 was the bill and 2000 was the tip the attendant kept to himself. In Nico and Vinz' voice, 'Am I wrong?'.

It is mathematically wrong to say they paid 9,000 naira each, coz they paid a joint fee of 25,000 naira, d attendant was given 5,000 returned 1k each nd took 2k, so so so so, there is no missing money.... Dnt tell me am wrong
Re: Nigeria’s Biggest Hotel Booking Agency, Hotels.ng Is Currently Recruiting by rawlineo2000(m): 6:53pm On Nov 21, 2014
there is no remaining #1000 because the total money paid by the guest now amounts to #27000 which includes the #2000 thats with the attendant. So if we add the #3000 they got back it sum up to #30000. The #2000 thats with the attendant has been added to their bill which makes it #9000.

30k was paid for services while 3k was refund. nw it was assumed 9k paid by each guest.
Mathematically, 9x3=27.

However, 2k that cud hv gone to bellhop & total paid after a discount of 1k frm each guest =27k + 2k =29k.

Therefore,In assumption that 30k was paid by the guests. the balance of 1k will end up as tip for Mr bellhop because is an insignificant amount.

The guest originally paid 8333.3 since 5k was returned (25000/3)
1k was returned to each and 2k pocketed makin 9333.3 paid by each guest.
9333.3x 3 = 27999.9999 + 2k pocketed = 30k. so the remaining 1k is in the first 25k.... simple!
each guest paid 9333.3 not 9k

Three guests check into a hotel room. The clerk says the bill is $30, so each guest pays $10. Later the clerk realizes the bill should only be $25. To rectify this, he gives the bellhop $5 to return to the guests. On the way to the room, the bellhop realizes that he cannot divide the money equally. As the guests didn't know the total of the revised bill, the bellhop decides to just give each guest $1 and keep $2 as a tip for himself. Each guest got $1 back: so now each guest only paid $9; bringing the total paid to $27. The bellhop has $2. And $27 + $2 = $29 so, if the guests originally handed over $30, what happened to the remaining $1?

Solution
The key to understanding the riddle intuitively is to realize that, while each man did pay $9, he did not pay $9 to the hotel. Each one paid $8.33 to the hotel ($8.33 × 3 = $25), and $0.66 to the bellhop ($0.66 × 3 = $2), for a total of $27 spent by the group. $25 + $2 = $27, and so does $9 × 3.

The initial payment of $30 is accounted for as the clerk takes $25, the bellhop takes $2, and the guests get a $3 refund. It adds up. After the refund has been applied, we only have to account for a payment of $27. Again, the clerk keeps $25 and the bellhop gets $2. This also adds up.

There is no reason to add the $2 and $27 – the $2 is contained within the $27 already. Thus the addition is meaningless (mixing cost and cash). Instead the $2 should be subtracted from the $27 to get the revised bill of $25.

This becomes clear when the initial and net payments are written as simple equations. The first equation shows what happened to the initial payment of $30:

$30 (initial payment) = $25 (to clerk) + $2 (to bellhop) + $3 (refund)
The second equation shows the net payment after the refund is applied (subtracted from both sides):

$27 (net payment) = $25 (to clerk) + $2 (to bellhop)
Both equations make sense, with equal totals on either side of the equal sign. The correct way to get the bellhop's $2 and the guests $27 on the same side of the equal sign ("The bellhop has $2, and the guests paid $27, how does that add up?"wink is to subtract, not add:

$27 (final payment) - $2 (to bellhop) = $25 (to clerk)
This question is very simple when thought of in a different manner. The hotel receives $30 from the guests and gives $5 to the bellhop to return to the guests. $30 subtract $5 equals $25. $3 is given to the guests and the bellhop keeps $2. Thus, $3 plus $2 equals $5, and the remaining $25 is in the possession of the hotel.

This is clearly not a paradox, and involves only the switching of subtraction for addition. Each patron has paid $9 for a total of $27. The storyteller adds the $2 that the bellhop pilfered, but he should have subtracted the $2 to make a total of $25 paid. So 3 × $9 = $27, which accounts for the $25 room and the $2 given to the bellhop.

there is no #1,000 remaining because its assume dat the total sum paid by the guest amounts to #27,000 which includes the #2,000 that's with the attendant. So if we add the #3,000 that was given back to them by the attendant,it sums up to #30,000.
The #2,000 thats with the attendant has been added
to their bill which is assumed dat the sum of #9,000 was paid by each guest.

LETS SIMPLIFY THIS

30,000 was handed over by the guest at the front desk.

Now- front desk realises he needs to charge 25,000 ONLY!

He sends Bellhop to hand back 5000 over paid..... NOW lets do some maths

25000 / 3 GUEST = 8333.33333333333333 RIGHT ( use your calculator for this )

Now lets do this again 8333.33333333333333 X 3 = 25000 + 3000 REFUND ( each guest getting 1000 back)

now then, 25000 + 3000 = 28000

Remember bellhop keeps 2000. we have our answer to the puzzle

28000 + 2000 = 30,000

HENCE - as mentioned by some members there is NO 1000 missing.......

BTW bellhop is a thief, he TIPPED himself . so 9333. is also another good answer. i would say this puzzle has several equation to resolve it. mainly there isnt 1000 missing

LOL!
So funny........ grin
The guest paid 30K and got 3K as refund (i.e 1k each).
Which simply means 27K paid plus 3K refunded is equals to 30K.
The 27K is made up of the 25K which goes to the account of hotel and 2K which goes to the pocket of the attendant.
No money is missing but 2K is stolen by the attendant.
It is just a riddle .... cool
