So you have been invited to attend an assessment centre, what should you expect on the day?

Assessment centres are becoming increasingly popular with employers as they show how a person will behave in different situations. Employers can identify the strengths and weaknesses of a candidate which helps them match that person to the job on offer.

Assessment centres may last from one to three days and normally take place at the employer’s premises or at a hotel. Employers may use different types and combinations of exercises. You will be assessed on each exercise by one or more assessors and they will be taking notes on your behaviour.

Group Exercises show how you work with others. You may be assigned to a group and may be given a topic to discuss or a task to perform. You will be observed and assessed on your
ability to participate, to lead without dominating, to contribute ideas, to persuade, and to make practical judgements.

In-tray Exercises show how you prioritise information. These consist of a variety of pieces of information and correspondence; you need to read the information, identify priorities and make recommendations for what actions you will take.

Presentations show your ability to communicate and think on your feet. You may be asked to give a presentation on a topic which is either given to you prior or during the session. Try to engage with the audience and remember to keep to the time permitted.

Role Playing shows how you behave in a given situation. They focus on a work-related issue with someone else playing the part of a colleague or client. You will be given background
information and time to prepare.

Aptitude Tests measure your reasoning and comprehension abilities. You may be given a variety of tests such as verbal, numerical, abstract and visual reasoning. Remember the employer is assessing your ‘fit’ with them, so show interest in the different exercises. If you show motivation and enthusiasm you will have a better chance of doing well.

Good luck!
