NANS WARNS NIGERIAN COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION AND MTN TELECOMMUNICATION COMPANY ON EXTORTION OF PHONE USERS; INCREMENT IN CALL RATES!

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the umbrella body of over 40 million Nigerian students, a body resolutely committed to the fight against oppression, sufferings and exploitation of Nigerian students, in particular, and well-meaning Nigerians in general, writes first and foremost, to specially commend the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for creating an enabling environment for competition among operators in the telecommunication industry, thus reducing the exploitation of Nigerians by these telecommunications companies since its establishment by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is using this medium to charge the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), being the Independent National Regulatory Authority for the telecommunications industry in Nigeria, not to relents in its effort, especially in cautioning one of the network provider in the country, MTN Nigeria, on their recent extortion of call users by increasing the call rates on their different packages to outrageous rates thereby becoming too costly, un-affordable and unbearable to Nigerians. NANS views the exploitation by MTN Nigeria, as a deliberate attempt to exploit and impoverish Nigerians. It is calculated crusade against Nigerians. NANS, vehemently kicks against this callous act of MTN Nigeria.

As an example, for MTN subscribers in Abuja on the MTN Zone tariff plan, call rates are being charged at 40.00 kobo/second. The same call rates was fixed for residents in Akure, Lokoja, Port Harcourt, Okenne, Sokoto and other places in the country. This action is not exempted from our different tertiary institution campuses across Nigeria. A student that want to call home for allowances or any other requests finds it difficult to call. This exploitation has ridiculously forced some students to undergo "night vigils" most times just to make calls at midnights due to the outrageous call rates during the day. MTN Nigeria now find financial joy in extorting Nigerians for the purpose of their gains, the provision of qualitative and efficient telecommunications services' throughout the country and adequate commitment to telecommunications plight is no more germane to them.

Finally, we urge the NCC to caution and monitor the excesses of MTN, and enforce MTN Nigeria to reverse back to the then call rates that Nigerian students and the general public find comfortable (4.00kobo/seconds, 8.00 kobo/seconds, 12.00 kobo/seconds). Failure to reverse to these "student friendly" and very affordable tariff will force NANS to lead a 1,000,000-man peaceful protest to the office of NCC and MTN to air our grievances. A shutdown of all MTN services (mast) within the four-walls of all tertiary institutions across the nation will be carried out till the yearning of Nigerian students are met. NANS do hold the irrepressible right to offer timely warning to NCC and MTN knowing quite well the gross implications that our actions can have if there is no total reversal on the call rates. We warn NCC and MTN to consider this and urgently resolve all issues. NANS says NO to extortion of MTN users.

While we have sent our complaints and requests in good faith, we do hope to get a favourable and prompt response soonest.

Signed;
The Vice President, National Affairs, National Association of Nigerian Students, (NANS).
