Less than a week after he endorsed GEJ, the 40-year-old NANS president is expelled for fraud

March 2, 2015

It’s not everyday you find a 40-year-old leading a union comprising of undergraduates, unless – of course – you are in Nigeria.

Just last Thursday, as president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), 40-year-old Tijani Usman, endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan for reelection as president. The endorsement generated ripples across several NANS chapters across the country including in Lagos and Borno.

On Monday, Usman was shown the red card by the National Joint Campus Committee (NJCC), which is the legislative body of the union.

The NJCC led by Yakubu Abdullai, chairman, and Magnus Okosisi, secretary, said that Usman is guilty of fraud and impersonation. It urged all parastatals to disregard Shehu and his executive members.

In a statement, the NJCC said:

“NANS hereby expels Tijani Usman and his executive members, and warns them to stop parading themselves as NANS executives so as to avoid the wrath on Nigerian students whom they terribly betrayed on several occasions,” read a statement signed by Abdullai and Okosisi.

“This has become necessary in view of the pains inflicted on the union as a result of the misinformation on Asaba election and blatant disregard of the position of Nigerian students on national issues.

“NANS calls on agencies, ministries, state governments and foreign missions to stop dealing with Tijani Usman and his executives. They have been an embarrassment to NANS. “We thank Nigerians for their support and understanding on issues that concern students and we will replicate such gesture by presenting credible and acceptable leadership that will champion the overall interest of NANS.”

It's only those that are enshrined in corrupt practices across the nation or those directly benefiting from the corruption infested GEJ's government that would support his re-election.

I am glad that it was served by his own 'contemporaries'.

NANS backs Jonathan for President

February 26, 2015

ABUJA—National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Thursday endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan as their preferred candidate for the March 28 presidential election.

The National President of NANS, Comrade Tijani Usman made the confirmation at a one-day National Student’s Association Rally in Abuja. Usman said that the decision to back President Jonathan was borne out of the conviction of the President’s achievements that touched on the lives of the students and youths of the country.

He said: ‘’We are supporting President Jonathan because he is the first president ever to have released about N200 billion at a one full swoop to the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASSU, for the overall uplifting and development of the universities. He similarly established more than 24 new universities across the country. He has also set up 124 Almajiri schools for our brothers in the northern part of country.”

’40-year-old’ now president of Nigerian students

September 15 2014

The National Association of Nigerian students (NANS) has elected Tijani Usman Shehu as its new president, amid chaos and violence that characterised its convention at Delta State University, Abraka, Delta state. Shehu is said to have had well over 160 votes from 239 eligible voters present.

Shehu is reported to be a student of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He was also an officer of the association in the 1990s.

Many resisted his participation in the election for studentship and age reason, but his fans opposed, arguing that only his parents could tell his true age.

“I know many are crying wolf over his age and NANS’ normal cry of non-studentship,” a fan of his wrote on Facebook.

“But if truly he was not a student, then the CPC or the convention chairman was in a good position to pronounce it and disqualify him.

But since the reverse is the case, then Tijani Usman is a student and nobody should tell me his age except his parents.” A source who was at the convention in Asaba told TheCable that the convention was brought to an abrupt end with the election of just four office holders.

“They brought the convention to an abrupt end when they had voted into their four key offices; the president, senate president, treasurer and ex-officio II,” he said. Many of those who attended the convention had expressed fears that the new NANS would be an appendage of the People Democratic Party (PDP), as the new president is a staunch supporter of the party.

“That’s not hidden,” a top NANS figure told TheCable. “All I see here is continuity, as the previous president, Yinka Gbadebo (aka Ayefelle), a student representative of the just-concluded national confab was in support of the president-elect and both of them support Team Jonathan 2015″

Roys Ochais, the newly-elected senate president whose university could not be confirmed also said to be close 40 years of age. Many student-senators decried the hands of political parties in the running of the NAN elections. “Most senators (student union presidents) are selling their tags to stand by who they will vote for” an aspirant told TheCable.

“It is an irony that the people who say Buhari is too old for to be president in 2015 will elect a 40-year-old as NANS president.”

NANS UNDER FIRE!

OCTOBER 21, 2014
... ... ...
... ...
... ...
...Recall that NANS led and motivated mass action against the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) imposed by the Ibrahim Babangida. The association, unbowed by military might, remained a strong opposition to the military. Worthy of mention was the heroic courage of the association during the popular ‘Ali Must Go’ protest. Sadly, gone were the days when every government in power dreaded students like a gadfly.

Today, NANS presently wears a new face painted with wealth. During the last strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the association had condemned ASUU for prolonging the strike despite certain concessions made by the Federal Government and had threatened to drag the varsity lecturers to court for keeping them at home for such a long time. This position contradicted the earlier resolve of the association not to get involved in the crisis, noting that the agitation by the aggrieved lecturers was for the good of the nation’s university system. What made the students’ body shift its ground and become so sympathetic with the government, despite the reasonable demands made by their lecturers remained unclear.

However, investigation by our reporters revealed that key executive officers of the union drive in a convoy of exotic cars, spending weeks in five-star hotels on the bills of faceless benefactors. They become hired hands for those seeking elective offices. Members of the union serve as advance party for politicians during political rally, chanting their ‘Aluta’ songs in solidarity. The students’ body has degenerated to a lame dog, crawling behind self-seeking politicians for pittance. To some students, NANS has ceased to protect their interests and must be disbanded.

Recently, one- time Senate President of the association, Tijani Usman, emerged the 28th NANS President amid high expectations for change from those who want corruption rooted out of the students’ body.

If at the age of 40 he is already building a profile as a corrupt official at NANS level, what happens if he gets into mainstream politics?

When we tell people that this country is rotten to the bones, they tell you"Ordinary stealing is not corruption".

So much for advocating for"youth"to be in charge.

Nice one there. How can any reasonable student endorse this government. The expelled NANS President has shown signs that he would be worse than Jude, a former NANS President and a serving SSA to Jonathan. NANS (then known as NUNS) died in the days of Segun Okeowo and Mayegun.

I could not agree more @OrlandoOwoh.
NANs has been nothing more than a pliable tool in willing hands, for quite sometime now.
