By Ibrahim Shuaibu Kano — The late military Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, did not loot the national treasury contrary to the general impression, two military former heads of state have said. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, who ruled Nigeria between 1983 and 1985, and his successor, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, gave Abacha the clean bill in Kano yesterday after the rememberance prayers marking 10 years of the death of Abacha, who ruled between 1993 and 1998. Abacha was accused of stealing nearly £5 billion while in office, out of which over $1 billion has reportedly been recovered from various sources around the world. Abacha never stole, yet A total of 22.5 million euro has been recovered by the Federal Government from the confiscation on money laundered by General Sani Abacha. If Abacha stole with oil selling at 9 Dollar per barrel and was able to do all the roads, schools, bridges, maintained the value of Naira and develop Abuja, why then is the Naira losing value and Government nearing collapse with oil at 59 Dollars per barrel 1 Like |

This is an old article, many years old. Watch the recent Channels TV interview with Buhari, when asked about the performance of military governments, he clearly acknowledged that Abacha was found to have embezzled money but challenged the interviewer about any evidence that his (Buhari's) government did the same. |
