Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheik Ahmed Abubakar Gumi, has said if the military had not interrupted civil rule in the past, Nigeria would have been better by now.

He said those who brushed aside the nation’s constitution had now turned around to use it, adding that all military men in politics who had, at one time or the other, terminated civilian regimes had no moral justification to complain of rigging in the 2015 general election.

Gumi, who retired as a Major from the Nigerian Army, spoke on Monday, when members of the Kaduna State chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo held a consultative meeting with him over fears of violence in 2015 election.

He said most Nigerian leaders were over recycled and had reached a point that they should give way for the younger ones.

According to him, ”no military man has moral ground to complain of election rigging in 2015 because if the military had allowed democracy to grow, this country would have developed better than this.”

“The military keep going into our democracy because of corruption but if you look back, history is repeating itself because it is the same military that puts aside our constitution that wants to use the same constitution.”

“We are having difficult time in Nigeria, but things will be better because it is better to be patient for four years than to be lamenting for 40 years. Nigeria is going through developmental stages.

“I want to say that Nigeria should bring complete new leaders who have not served this country before because we keep on recycling old leaders who don’t have the interest of the country at heart, but their personal interest.

“I also want to tell Nigerians that they should not see the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) as opposing religious parties, but purely political parties which are doing things the way they like, either personal or political.

Buhari in his justification of his toppling of an elected civillian govt blamed the electoral for not being capable of electing credible leadership and that military coups will remain inevitable as long as this persists.

Funny thing is that the same electorate has been rejecting him since but in his ever arrogating manner he keeps shoving himself on them.

Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

Only a mad man will continue doing the same thing and expecting a different result.

History is there to guide you.

One of the major driving force of Buhari's renewed popularity is that most people who support him refuse to do their research on him and those that ought to know better claim amnesia for their own selfish reasons.

Please explain to me what democracy means in Nigeria and to Nigerians.

From the little I know so far, democracy, in Nigeria, means "stealing is not corruption".

You could do better...why not just call him clueless and demand he goes back to otuoke.

Your Buhari did not see anything wrong with Abacha and according to his moral ruler he saw the Abacha govt as not corrupt despite the steady reparations of stolen funds stashed all over the world held by the Abacha family.

Whatever the military did happened in the past. The question now should be; In what ways have our present leaders tried to restore/maintain a transparent leadership? Or is it the military we will blame for the current value of the Naira?

Very true. People like pa Buhari have no moral right to even contest elections. If not for Buhari's military intervention Nigeria today will be rubbing shoulders with advanced democracies like USA.

The unfortunate thing for him is that the law of Nature will go against him via the innocent blood shed because of his unguarded comments. Buhari has lost and will never win any democratic elections in Nigeria.
