If you are considering the job market ,medical science(s) would pay off better

Now that's not a question I can help you with ......you have to sit down and ask yourself how much you are willing to put into it

That's a possibility but the difference is there are more unemployed engineers than medical scientists..... in other words as a medical personnel you aren't likely to look for jobs

Op, when you say 'medical sciences', is it Medicine and surgery' or other related courses like Med Lab, Anatomy etc.

I'm an Engineer and I assure you that both Med Surg and Engineering fields are lucrative. A medical doctor has a better job security and assured practice. An engineer will easily fit into many job descriptions, even those not related to engineering like Banks and the likes.

A practicing Engr makes more money than his colleagues in the medical field but at this level, money shouldn't be a driving force, job security should be your primary concern and lucky for you, both fields will give that to you. Medicine is more tasking though. 5 yrs + 1yr housemanship will make you a house officer whereas 5yrs will make you an engineer. A house-officer doesn't earn much, you will need to enroll for Residency program so as to be a consultant for you to break make it big in medical practice.

My elder brother is a medical doctor and I know exactly what both fields is like; he just finished his residency training that took 4+yrs so as to earn 250k per month. An Engineer with good result (2'1) can make that cash with a good company without needing a masters degree. But as a consultant, he can be consulting for other private clinics and easily make extra dough; that's the beauty of medicine.

Petroleum/Chem Engr is good. Add little certification along the way and you'll be good to go.

Well...... I will comment from the Engineers perspective. To be a very successful engineer u need to often think and flow with the dynamicity of the career path. Technologies change now nd then, it is never routine except u want it, then if so get ready to be stagnant. Secondly most engineering jobs especially at entry levels requires you to move up nd down and at times under unfavourable conditions and requires you to often make very calculated decisions. Are u ready? Thirdly u will get to find out that engineering is more than the formulae nd theories taught in the class, but it is all about you nd your way of reasoning nd anaylsing issues. These are but a few. So are u willing?

Re: Confused! A Degree In Engineering Or Medical Sciences! by iwriterng(m): 4:03am On Dec 25, 2014
Medical sciences is different from Medicine and Surgery.

Medical sciences has two divisions; Basic Medical Sciences which includes Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and medical microbiology, the second division which is Clinical Sciences includes; Medical laboratory science, Clinical psychology, Pharmacology e.t..c. Most of these courses are not lucrative at first degree level, which means you must earn a second degree before you can start earning a reasonable income. Taking into account that this would take up to 8 straight years of studying (Same thing applies to medicine). Medical field is not as crowded as Engineering, hence you stand a higher chance of getting a job compared to your Engineering counterpart.

Can't say much about Engineering though.

@MAZIOMENUKO. 4yrs + for residency? when i'm thinking its 1yr. and yes i meant "MBBS"

Well, he started in a teaching hospital up north before the issue of boko haram made him relocate to the south to finish up. The entire process took 4 yrs, I don't know if its because of the obstruction but he finished a phase of the program before relocating to south. I'm sure it takes more than 1yr to become a consultant.

Also, the area you chose to specialize may determine the number of yrs u spend on residency; vis a viz Internal medicine, ENTH, surgery, pediatrics, ophtamology and the rest. Its also a factor of passing the exam: I know a medical doctor pursuing a residency in surgery and it has taken him more than 4yrs now; maybe surgery is more complex and demanding.

Lol@boring. There's nothing like boring medical doctor. Their studies makes them book-wormish as its more tasking. Imagine covering Biochemistry, Physiology, Anatomy and Microbiology before your 2nd Mbbs which is at the end of 3rd year. Each of those courses mentioned above is a full 4yrs program in the university. So you're virtually covering a 3x4 =12yrs course content within 2yrs...that's how tasking it is.
An engineering student can club and have social life and comfortably make 2'1 with devotion. MBBS students can tell you more about it.

Being boring or not are trivial issues that shouldn't border you now. Remember that MBBS is a 6yr program minimum; meaning that for example, if you fail to pass @ least 2 courses at 2nd MBBS, you will repeat 3rd year. So you can actually spend more than the 6yrs in pursuit of 1st degree.

I'm not trying to discourage you from medicine and surgery. I even wonder how you manage to get admitted into medial school and engineering simultaneously b'cos I'm aware you chose between biology and maths for your ume for mbbs/engineering respectively. So, did you write 5 courses at ume?
Re: Confused! A Degree In Engineering Or Medical Sciences! by simba1: 11:11pm On Dec 25, 2014
