Anambra's Economy Shall Be Unaffected By Falling Oil Price - Obiano by Sunnybobo3(m): 11:13am On Jan 02, 2015
The Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has assured Ndi Anambra that their hopes and dreams for a prosperous year shall not fall with the falling price of oil in the international market.

Delivering his New Year Message to the people titled “Stretching to a New Height of Excellence,” Governor Obiano observed that “the future of any society lies in its capacity to look beyond the darkness and doubts of today and see a glimmer of hope in the shadows of tomorrow.”

According to him, though many experts have predicted a tough year for Nigeria in the face of plummeting oil prices, such forecasts would never dampen the aspirations of Ndi Anambra adding that “with our enormous human and material resources, we shall not surrender our ambitions to dwindling oil prices in the international markets. We shall draw on history and our past accomplishments to stretch the scope of our vision and expand the boundaries of our possibilities.”

Governor Obiano therefore explained that his administration had made bold efforts to triple the state’s Internally Generated Revenue from the present N1.1bn.  “This will insulate us from the shock of falling oil prices and a possible dip in federal allocations to states. Therefore, the same determination with which we have pursued our security challenges is what we will bring to fighting the leakages in our IGR,” Chief Obiano further explained. The governor therefore appealed to the people of the state to ensure that they pay their taxes regularly and on time as that would give him enough headroom to undertake capital projects and complete them on schedule.

Promising that his administration would change the game of purposeful leadership in Anambra State, Governor Obiano enthused that this year, “we shall complete many landmark projects like the three flyovers in Awka and the six-lane stretch of road from Amawbia to Amansea. We shall also complete and commission the Agulu Lake Hotel Resort and other critical road projects we inherited from my predecessor. We shall flag off more projects covering the Four Pillars of Development of this administration and lay the foundation for an ambitious economic growth.”

Governor Obiano also reiterated his administration’s commitment to the war against crime in the state assuring that further investments in security would be robust as the state would continue with its zero-tolerance of crime in the New Year.

Describing the New Year as a year of hope and fulfillment, Governor Obiano assured that “this year, we shall work for a new social and economic order in Anambra State. We shall build strong families to ensure the emergence of stronger communities. We shall force positive change on various aspects of our life that have been resistant to our march to progress.” Reminding Ndi Anambra that the New Year was an election year, Governor Obiano urged the people to participate more actively in the electoral process and to cast their votes for APGA and President Goodluck Jonathan in the coming elections.

Concluding his message, Governor Obiano declared – “Ndi Anambra, before us lies an awesome year! This year, we shall stretch to a new height in our pursuit of Excellence and prove to the world that Anambra State can be great again! Let us build a land of progress and lift our homeland high!”

Willie is working. This man has already increased Anambra's internally generated revenue by about 120% within a period of nine months from 500 million naira to 1.1 billion naira monthly and has a target of trippling the same this year 2015.

@Sunnybobo.

One thing i know is that many states esp those in SE and SS saw that the future of oil is very bleak that is why they invested so much in agriculture and agro-allied businesses despite being the producers of the said oil yet they look beyond that.

In Anambra State people are selling the shops here to set up livestock businesses, the number of commercial farms alone in Anambra will make you shout.

The mass interest to farming in Anambra is awesome, everybody is talking about fish farming and rearing of animals here, even among the business elites farming and need to invest in it is dominating most of their discussion.

Obiano have done well in agriculture, infact the awareness alone is massive even among the high school students, my niece a JS1 Student at St Charles College was asking my dad if he could grant him some portion of our land here at Iyiowa to start fish farming, the awareness and interest is soooooo much i can attest to that walahi.

The headline is a lie. I am certain the IGR of the state will not cover pensions, wages of government workers and provide for ongoing development. Anambra will see reduced share of federal allocation to which it is rightfully entitled. Less income, means the governor will have to be more creative to achieve his goals and I truly wish him well. All parts of Nigeria require major investment, especially in education so we have a workforce that is skilled and flexible. This cannot come cheap, so let the governor not deceive the people. When income is reduced in a household, we know the effects. Can we pretend it is different at state level?

The increase and targeted increase in IGR should be enough to cover any shortfall in the federal allocation hence the headline.

You would have done well by reading through the article first.

But if your Buhari told you that he would increase oil prices and stamp out corruption, you would have grabbed it without asking questions.

Don't be silly. We are talking about anambra state here. My point is simple. The income of the state is going to fall but it's responsibilities are likely to remain constant, or increase. It is deceptive for the governor to say there will be no impact. How that concerns Buhari or Jonathan is something your juvenile imagination should go play in the corner with. #fail

On the challenges facing his government, he cautioned Nigerians to brace up to the challenges arising from the dwindling oil revenue, caused by the falling oil prices world wide.

He revealed that having foreseen the ugly development he had initiated the move to improve the internally-generated revenue windows and has so far upped it from N500 million to N1,1 billion per month.

The governor stated that his ambition was to ensure that internally generated revenue hits the target of five billion monthly, stressing that such an increment would be reciprocated with increase in the monthly wage bill of workers.

He stated that the hope of Anambra State joining oil producing states under the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) could not be realized even with the pronouncement of President Goodluck Jonathan in 2013 that the State has become an oil producing State, saying it would only be possible if the production capacity of 55,000 barrel per day was achieved.
Governor Obiano further disclosed that he had not abandoned any of the projects that were initiated by his predecessor in office and assured that he would execute all of such projects fully and to a successful end.

Try and understand the nuance in what the governor is saying. There will be challenges, but he is working to prepare for them. These are tough times so let's not pretend otherwise.

The income of Nigeria is already falling for the same reason, do you ask Buhari questions when he promises you heaven and earth?

That's the way to go. Obaino we the citizens of Anambra state are solidly behind you.
There have been so much talk about diversification of the Nigerian Economy, I even listened to a governor blaming the federal government for the declining price of oil without stating how he intends to run a state less dependent on oil.
Until we give states more control of their resources a lot of state governors will never put on their thinking cap but will continue to wait for abuja.
MORE RESOURCE CONTROL FOR STATES BRINGS ABOUT MORE DIVERSIFICATION OF THE ECONOMY
