Twelve people were killed and ten wounded today when gunmen carried out a 'massacre' at the offices of a notoriously anti-Islamist newspaper in Paris - including a police officer who was executed as he begged for mercy on the pavement.
Three masked attackers brandishing Kalashnikovs burst into the Charlie Hebdo headquarters, opening fire on staff after seeking out journalists by name.
Those executed included four of the most famous cartoonists in France – men who had regularly satirised Islam and the Prophet Mohammed – including the newspaper's editor-in-chief, Stephane Charbonnier.

The poster was aimed at encouraging followers to shoot 11 people, all accused of offending Islam.
One of the men listed was Stephane Charbonnier, the editor-in-chief of Charlie Hebdo, who was top of the gunmen’s ‘hit list’ yesterday.
He had been living under police protection because of previous threats against his life.

He added : ‘We ask Allah to reward in the best way those who burned its headquarters and hacked its website, for you cooled off the chests of Muslims’, a reference to a previous fire bombing of the magazine’s offices.
Dozens of French nationals – and North African residents of France – are known to have studied in Yemen in recent years and last night all were being checked.
Like Britain, until yesterday France had believed the greatest threat to them was posed by returning IS fighters and their supporters.
In London both MI5 and MI6 were last night helping their counterparts in France.
French intelligence believes there are more than 1,000 of their nationals and another 500 North Africans with links to France are currently with militant groups in Iraq and Syria.
There are at least five IS fighting units made-up of French and Belgian nationals.
